What Is The Job About?

Hawk-Eye Innovations is looking for a motivated Technical Operations Engineer to join our Baseball Technical Operations Team. In this role, you will work closely with the Baseball Technical Operations Team as well as the Baseball Operations Team to build, test, and maintain Python-based applications that will be used in daily operations of the MLB StatCast System. Alongside this, you will learn the ins and outs of the Baseball Tracking system, supporting live operations through your technical expertise. This is an ideal position for a recent graduate, bootcamp finisher, or self-taught coder looking to kickstart their career in Sports Technology in a supportive and exciting environment, while gaining valuable experience and skills using complex applications and processes to deliver live data to one of the world’s leading sports leagues.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Support: Ideate, develop, and maintain a small library of Python applications used to improve both product and process for daily operations, as well as Google AppScript automations

  • Supporting our Systems: Provide technical expertise to our daily operations, assisting with system management, resolving live issues, and preparing future systems for operation.

  • Testing, Development, and Innovation: Testing new features and applications, driving improvements to both product and process, and developing new tools and tactics to improve daily operations and delivery.

  • Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution: Investigate, address, and communicate resolutions to internal and external stakeholders, working closely with internal teams and the UK development team.

  • Documentation & Communication: Keep internal documentation up to date and accurate; work cross-functionally to share knowledge and improve our training materials and resources.

  • Collaborating with Other Teams: Support our Operations, Accounts, and Implementation teams by being a dependable technical resource during calibrations, live operations, and installations.

  • Supporting the wider Sony Sports Team: Begin our push to integrate the Hawk-Eye and KinaTrax Tech Ops team by overlapping time with our KinaTrax counterparts in assistance with weekly tasks and objectives.

Requirements / Skills:

  • Base Knowledge of Python: A solid understanding of Python syntax, data types (strings, lists, dictionaries), and loops

  • Base Knowledge of Google AppScript: A solid understanding of AppScript syntax, data types (strings, lists, dictionaries), and functions

  • Practical Experience: At least one or two personal projects, internships, or a portfolio (GitHub) that demonstrates your ability to build functional scripts or basic applications

  • Problem-Solver: A logical mindset and the ability to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable tasks

  • Willingness to Learn: A proactive attitude toward learning new libraries, frameworks, and projects

  • Quick Learner: Ability to tackle a steep learning curve, learning the ins and outs of complex applications quickly

  • Strong Computer Knowledge: A strong foundation in computer and technical skills, being able to navigate Windows machines and Operating Systems with ease

Nice To Have:

  • Exposure to other tracking systems and/or experience within baseball operations, either with other vendors or MLB team

  • Familiarity with a web framework like Django or Flask

  • Basic understanding of SQL and databases

  • Exposure to version control systems (specifically Git)

  • Knowledge of basic frontend technologies (HTML, CSS)

  • Experience and/or knowledge of other development tools and languages, such as Java, C++, etc
