Job Description
The position of Officer for the Campus Safety department works under the direction and supervision of the Director and Assistant Director for Campus Safety. All officers on shift will directly report to the Lead Supervisor or Supervisor assigned to the shift. As an essential employee of UMSV, you must remain or report for work during partial or full-day closings of the site due to hazardous or other emergency conditions as well as inclement weather.
Generally, Campus Safety Officer position is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure campus environment by patrolling the grounds, monitoring surveillance systems, and responding to emergencies. Officers enforce UMSV policies and local laws, control access to facilities, and assist students and staff with safety/security concerns. Additionally, they handle incident reporting and provide support during emergencies such as medical situations, fires, or security threats. Their role is essential in ensuring the safety of the UMSV community and protecting campus property.
Shift - 11pm - 7am
Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular patrols of university buildings and grounds.
- Monitor dormitory access to ensure only authorized individuals are allowed for entry.
- Inspect doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are securely locked.
- Issue warnings to individuals violating rules, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying prohibited items, and remove those engaging in suspicious or criminal activity.
- Examine equipment and machinery for signs of tampering or misuse.
- Stay alert for irregularities like fire hazards, leaking pipes, or unsecured doors, and provide written reports on such incidents.
- Monitor departing personnel to prevent theft of university property.
- Activate alarms or contact the police/fire department in case of fire or unauthorized individuals.
- Record incidents of property damage, unusual occurrences, and equipment malfunctions for supervisory review.
- Manage the flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic at entrances and other critical points.
- Provide security for major events, such as Commencement ceremonies and Homecoming.
- Enforce campus parking regulations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
- One to three years of related experience and/or training.
- Experience working in non-profit organizations, ideally within institutions of higher education.
- Strong interpersonal, judgment, and analytical skills.
- New York State Certified Security Guard
- New York Fire Department Certified Fire Guard (F-04)
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and be on call for emergencies as needed.
- Able to operate with a high level of independence, accountability, and decision-making authority.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Includes moderate physical exertion. The employee will be on their feet for a majority if not for their entire shift including extensive walking and standing. Position requires mobility, occasionally climbs, crawls, stoops or otherwise works in an awkward position. Lifting or moving heavy parcels, machines and equipment up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period.
