Our expertise includes water and wastewater treatment, stormwater management, hydraulic modeling, and environmental compliance. Committed to innovation, integrity, and teamwork, we enhance the sustainability and resilience of the communities we serve.
Why this role matters:
As a Civil Engineer at Water Works Engineers, you’ll help shape infrastructure that directly enhances the quality of life in communities across Northern California and the greater Western U.S. Based in our San Mateo office, you’ll work on essential municipal projects—from water and wastewater conveyance systems to pump stations, reservoirs, and civil site improvements. This role is ideal for engineers with at least two years of relevant experience and a passion for designing resilient, sustainable infrastructure that serves growing communities and supports long-term public health. Whether you hold your EIT or PE license, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to impactful civil engineering projects while building your technical expertise and professional leadership skills.
Your daily impact:
- Support the planning and design of civil infrastructure for water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, including pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs, and associated site improvements.
- Perform engineering calculations, site layout, grading and drainage design, utility coordination, and preparation of construction documents.
- Develop construction drawings, technical specifications, and engineer’s cost estimates using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other industry-standard tools.
- Conduct hydraulic modeling and analysis of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Support permitting activities and ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal requirements, including CEQA, NEPA, and stormwater regulations.
- Participate in construction administration tasks, including field observations, submittal reviews, and support during project implementation.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary internal teams, public agencies, and external stakeholders to support project delivery and maintain alignment with client goals.
- Contribute to quality assurance and technical consistency across deliverables.
- Engage in ongoing professional development through collaboration, mentorship, and project-based learning.
What you bring to the table:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or Environmental Engineering with a strong civil focus) from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in municipal water, wastewater, or stormwater infrastructure projects.
- EIT certification is required; PE license preferred or the ability to obtain licensure within one year in your primary state of assignment.
- Familiarity with regional standards and permitting processes in California (or other Western states such as AZ, UT, NM, or ID) is a plus.
- Working knowledge of hydraulics, site civil design, stormwater management, and municipal infrastructure planning.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office; experience with hydraulic modeling tools is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, solution-oriented mindset.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits, construction support, and client meetings.
