Reporting to senior government delivery leaders, this intern will apply modern computer science, data analytics, and AI techniques to complex supply chain risk and sustainment challenges in support of national security and operational readiness missions.
This is a full-time, paid internship designed for students who want to work on operationally relevant, high-impact analytics in a structured, compliance-driven environment. The role is based in Huntsville, Alabama, following a hybrid model that supports collaboration with distributed government delivery teams.
As a Defense Sustainment Integration Intern, you will contribute directly to analytics and AI initiatives that improve readiness, resilience, and risk visibility across defense sustainment ecosystems. Responsibilities include:
Apply data engineering and analytics techniques to transform complex, multi-source datasets into decision-ready outputs
Build and maintain data pipelines (ETL/ELT) with automated validation, logging, traceability, and reproducibility
Implement data quality checks and monitoring to ensure completeness, consistency, and reliability of analytics outputs
Support entity resolution and record linkage efforts to produce high-confidence “golden records” for suppliers, parts, and facilities
Develop relationship and network views that illuminate dependencies, tiers, chokepoints, and concentration risk across supply chains
Assist in building risk indicators and early-warning signals that surface potential sustainment disruptions
Prototype analytics or AI approaches for risk scoring, anomaly detection, and alerting, with clear and explainable rationale
Produce dashboards, notebooks, and short decision-oriented briefs aligned to real-world sustainment workflows
Document methods, assumptions, and results to ensure explainability, auditability, and operational usability
Collaborate closely with engineers, analysts, and delivery leaders to align analytics outputs with mission needs
Example project areas may include:
Supplier and manufacturer entity resolution with confidence scoring
Supply chain relationship graphs identifying shared dependencies and chokepoints
Early-warning indicators combining lead-time shifts, adverse events, and dependency risk
Data quality “flight deck” dashboards supporting sustainment analytics platforms
Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Data Analytics/Data Science, AI/ML, or a related field
Strong programming skills in Python (data wrangling, validation, ML workflows) and SQL (joins, window functions, performance fundamentals)
Experience with core data engineering concepts: schema design, ETL, testing, version control, and reproducibility
Understanding of modern analytics and AI practices, including feature engineering, model evaluation, and explainability
Ability to translate technical findings into clear, decision-focused written narratives
Comfortable working in structured, compliance-oriented environments with sensitive data
Preferred Experience (Not Required):
Exposure to supply chain, logistics, sustainment, or acquisition data concepts
Experience with entity resolution, fuzzy matching, or record linkage techniques
Familiarity with graph analytics (e.g., NetworkX, Neo4j) and relationship-based risk analysis
Experience with data quality frameworks (e.g., Great Expectations or similar patterns)
Exposure to secure development practices and controlled data environments
Paid, full-time 10-week Summer Internship
Hybrid work model supporting collaboration with distributed delivery teams
Hands-on experience applying AI and analytics to mission-critical sustainment challenges
Mentorship from senior government delivery, analytics, and engineering leaders
Exposure to real-world, operational decision-making environments
Inclusive, mission-driven culture focused on rigor, learning, and impact
Networking opportunities across Exiger’s Government Solutions organization
