What You'll Do
The Digital Literacy Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality, inclusive, and culturally relevant digital literacy instruction to residents of King County Housing Authority (KCHA) properties, particularly Firwood Circle and Burndale Homes. This role supports individuals—especially those furthest from opportunity, including limited-English speakers, immigrants and refugees, older adults, and low-income jobseekers—in gaining confidence and critical technology skills to pursue employment, education, and navigate everyday digital tasks. This position reflects a collaborative “blended ownership” model in which KCHA provides space, outreach assistance, and access to laptops and Wi-Fi, while YWCA provides direct recruitment and instructional services. Training will be offered in group classes and one-on-one settings and may be co-taught with ESL or career navigation support.
This position requires critical thinking around how external systems impact the work that we are doing through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism and grounding those principles in everyday work, as well as working well in non-white environments and championing anti-racism policy, are required job skills and core values. Expectations of your role:
Conduct outreach and coordinate with KCHA to recruit and enroll residents in digital literacy classes, ensuring equitable access for Section 8 and public housing participants.Assess learners’ skill levels and language needs to customize instruction that is accessible and relevant.Deliver digital skills training using existing and adapted curricula, ranging from foundational to advanced levelsIntegrate job readiness and/or ESL support into instruction, based on learner goals.Provide one-on-one support and coaching for learners with specific digital needs, such as telehealth access, resume creation, GED prep, or online career trainingProviding hands-on opportunities for students to practice newly acquired skills in real-world scenariosRefer participants to advanced digital upskilling options (e.g., Coursera, Northstar Digital Literacy, LinkedIn Learning, DigitalLearn.org, Microsoft certifications) as appropriate.Track attendance, student progress, and skill milestones using internal databases; prepare narrative and quantitative reports for funders.Collaborate closely with YWCA career navigators and KCHA resident service coordinators.Coordinate with KCHA and PC’s for People to provide digital devices to residentsFoster an inclusive and empowering classroom environment grounded in the principles of equity, antiracism, and trauma-informed practice.Participate in program evaluation activities, digital equity coalitions, and community meetings as needed.Demonstrate the ability to interact with people of different culturesPerform other duties as assigned
Must have's to be successful:
Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, and digital justice.Minimum 1–2 years of experience in digital skills instruction or adult education, preferably with multicultural and multilingual learners.Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email platforms, and basic troubleshooting.Comfort with virtual learning platforms such as Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet.Ability to teach and explain digital concepts clearly to learners at varied skill levels.Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.Experience working with communities impacted by poverty, displacement, language barriers, or limited tech access.Understanding of trauma-informed and participant-centered teaching practices.Familiarity with workforce development or case management models is a plus.
