We’re excited to share that an opportunity currently exists for an Engineer-in-Training, Substation Design in the Substations Project Engineering team within the Project Development Department of AltaLink.
Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager, Substations Engineering, the successful candidate will be responsible for completion of designs on a wide range of projects including Capital Replacement & Upgrade (CR&U) projects and customer-driven Direct Assign projects. This role will appeal to individuals who have direct experience in the transmission utility industry. The primary focus is the experience in the areas of Substation & P&C design from the 25kV to 500kV levels, as well as an understanding of all disciplines of substations design and interactions (i.e., Protection & Control, SCADA, Telecommunications, and Lines).
Responsibilities:
- Design of electrical substation facilities including site and bus work layouts, equipment installation, grounding, controls, protection, metering and to completion of studies needed for projects.
- Deliver accurate and thorough designs that meet applicable industry standards, AltaLink design standards and engineering practices.
- Ensure designs are compatible with good construction practices and overall due diligence.
- Actively communicate and coordinate with other project team members at AltaLink with different specialties.
- Ensure accuracy of returned data for records updates.
- Identification of material required, and in some cases specify devices and equipment to be used in the design and construction.
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning. Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions, and effective cooperation.
- Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering;
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer with the Association of Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA); or be eligible to register immediately.
- This is an Engineer-in-Training role and therefore candidates with 0-4 years of related experience will be considered;
- Minimum of 2 years of medium or high voltage utility experience such as: Equipment layout, HV bus layout.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Strong written, reporting, graphical and oral presentation skills.
- Knowledge of MicroStation would be an asset. Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
- Experience with (or at least a technical understanding of), the following:
o Substation and bus layouts.
o High Voltage Power Equipment (including current transformers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, circuit breakers and surge arresters).
o AC and DC supplies.
o General knowledge of designing of Protection and control schemes.
o General knowledge of industry standards such as CSA, IEC, IEEE, ANSI.
