Inpatient Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant (NP/PA)

Position Summary

The Inpatient Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant provides specialized inpatient care for patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary, and pancreatic disorders. Working collaboratively with gastroenterologists and the multidisciplinary hospital team, this role supports consultation services, ongoing inpatient management, and coordination of care for medically complex patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient gastroenterology consultation and follow-up care
  • Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic GI conditions, including GI bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, and bowel obstruction
  • Perform comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and daily patient assessments
  • Develop and implement care plans in collaboration with supervising gastroenterologists
  • Manage medications and supportive therapies related to gastrointestinal conditions
  • Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies, and diagnostic results relevant to GI care
  • Assist with pre- and post-procedure care for endoscopic and interventional procedures
  • Coordinate care with hospitalists, surgeons, interventional radiology, nutrition services, and nursing staff
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in the electronic medical record
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and utilization initiatives
  • Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current NP or PA certification and state licensure
  • Eligibility for hospital credentialing and privileging
  • DEA registration or eligibility
  • Prior experience or specialized training in gastroenterology or inpatient medicine preferred

  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient evaluation and interpretation of diagnostic data
