This is a position working in a behavioral healthcare hospital. To deliver quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients who present for a behavioral health assessment or are hospitalized for treatment of psychiatric or emotional disorders; to serve actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supporting the organization philosophy of care; to ensure the safety and well-being of each patient.
*Work Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
*Pay Range: $50/hr. to $67/hr.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct medical screens for all patients who present for Intake
- Determine if the patients are medically stable and can be treated safely on-site. Must be able to identify neurological deficits and level of consciousness
- Conduct vital signs, breathalyzer, O2 saturation levels, and glucometer levels
- Calculate and interpret BMI
- Competent in assessment of communicable disease exposure, risk, and interventions
- Complete a pain assessment. Understanding of general and psychiatric medications
- Demonstrate understanding of EMTALA regulations and implementation
- Able to evaluate for emergency medical conditions and competent in assessing when stabilizing treatment is necessary
- Able to perform appropriate transfers to other facilities, including identification of risks and benefits of a transfer out
- Review of labs and medical histories of patients in medical facilities to determine medical appropriateness for admission
- Understanding of medical exclusion criteria and how to assess for conditions that are not medically appropriate for admission
- Able to perform case consultations with other RNs and physicians to determine medical appropriateness
- Ability to assess for substance intoxication and withdrawal symptoms. Assess for behavioral health symptomatology
- Conduct case consultations with physicians to determine the level of care for patients presenting for treatment
- Assess patients for self-harm/suicide risk and consult with a physician to determine appropriate monitoring levels for inpatient admissions
- Able to manage patients at risk of self-harm or harm to others while in Intake
- Complete risk assessments for AWOL, danger to others, sexual acting out behavior, and vulnerability
- Knowledge of DSM-5 diagnoses
Skills:
- Demonstrates sound leadership skills and utilizes these skills in organizing the activities and schedules for medical and/or non-medical tasks of the patient for a given shift
- Record of consistently high quality of clinical and interpersonal skills to be an exemplary role model to others
- Displays basic knowledge of treatment procedures, interventions common to acute psychotic as well as to non-violent crises intervention practice
- Basic knowledge of abnormal psychology as typically found in the general psychiatric population; application of this knowledge to patient nursing care; basic knowledge of medical terminology especially those terms associated with psychiatric care
- Through familiarity of Psychopharmacy and the use of psychotropic medications with the psychiatric population
- Basic teaching and training skills helpful; problem-solving; organizational and time management
- Crisis intervention skills; written and oral communication skills; skills in facilitating and/or co-facilitating process orientated and didactic groups
- Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a variety of clinical and support team members; empathy for patients and their families; skills in maintaining information as highly confidential
Requirements
- Valid California Registered Nurse License
- Psychiatric experience (1 year HIGHLY preferred)
- BLS (Basic Life Support ) Certification for Healthcare Providers following the American Heart Association guidelines
