About the Job
We are seeking a Manufacturing Shift Lead to oversee day-to-day production activities for our Energy Storage Systems. This role is responsible for coordinating technicians on shift, ensuring manufacturing processes are followed, and delivering safe, high-quality output in line with production plans.
The Shift Lead is a working leader. They will be visible on the floor, hands-on when needed, and accountable for execution. You will allocate labor and resources, track plan versus actual performance, and act as the first level of escalation for quality, safety, and throughput issues. This role is critical as Peak Energy scales from pilot builds into repeatable, scaled ESS manufacturing.
Responsibilities
Shift Leadership & Resource Allocation
- Lead and coordinate technicians during assigned shifts to meet production goals.
- Assign work, balance labor, and adjust resources in real time based on priorities and constraints.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for shift execution and issue escalation.
- Support technician onboarding, training, and adherence to standard work.
Manufacturing Execution & Process Compliance
- Ensure manufacturing processes, work instructions, and safety procedures are followed.
- Verify readiness at shift start (materials, tools, staffing, documentation).
- Identify deviations from standard work and take immediate corrective action to track and correct.
- Support process changes and controlled rollouts in collaboration with Engineering and Quality.
Quality Ownership & KPIs
- Own shift-level quality performance, including key quality KPIs (e.g., defects, rework, yield, scrap).
- Perform and oversee in-process and final inspections as required.
- Ensure defects are documented, contained, and escalated appropriately.
- Drive root cause and corrective action efforts for recurring quality issues.
Plan vs. Actual & Reporting
- Track daily production output against plan and identify gaps.
- Communicate status, risks, and blockers to manufacturing and operations leadership.
- Maintain accurate shift handoff notes, production logs, and quality records.
- Support data collection for throughput, downtime, and quality reporting.
Safety & Continuous Improvement
- Champion safety on the floor; enforce PPE and safe work practices.
- Proactively identify hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, efficiency, and flow.
- Support 5S, visual management, and standardized work initiatives.
Hands-On Support
- Step in as needed to support builds, troubleshooting, or bottleneck operations.
- Assist with equipment setup, minor maintenance, and line changeovers.
- Ensure production continues safely during disruptions or staffing gaps.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or associate degree preferred.
- Prior experience leading shifts, teams, or work cells (formal or informal).
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, quality systems, and standard work.
- Comfortable tracking KPIs, plan vs actual, and basic production metrics.
- Clear communicator with the ability to lead on the floor and escalate issues effectively.
- Safety-focused, detail-oriented, and quality-driven.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in battery manufacturing, energy storage systems, or electronics assembly.
- Familiarity with NPI, pilot manufacturing, or early production scaling.
- Exposure to Lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience working with MES, production trackers, or digital work instructions.
What Success Looks Like
- Shifts run to plan with minimal surprises.
- Technicians know priorities and follow standard work.
- Quality issues are caught early and do not escape the shift.
- Plan vs actual gaps are visible, understood, and acted upon.
- Clean handoffs between shifts and strong communication with leadership.
