Head-Royce School is seeking a full-time 6th grade teacher who is a culturally responsive, flexible, and enthusiastic educator to join our 6th Grade team as a history and science teacher. This is a 1-year position, starting in August for the 26-27 school year.  Full-time faculty members also serve as advisors in the Middle School. 

We seek teachers who are not only excited by the content they teach, but who are also actively engaged in evolving their classroom pedagogy to reflect the needs of 21st Century learners.  We want teachers who are excited to join our community of learners and collaborate with us on living our mission and our core values of Students First, Academic Excellence, Diversity, Belonging, and Civic Engagement. The successful candidate will align with these values and be dedicated to working to uphold them, in and outside of the classroom.   

The School seeks applicants who have experience in culturally responsive education and an understanding of how adolescents learn. Head-Royce teachers participate beyond the classroom as advisors and also as affinity group and club leaders. We seek applicants who have a strong academic background, experience in anti-bias pedagogy, an understanding of adolescents, and a genuine joy while working with students at this specific age level.

Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of culturally responsive teaching and learning.
  • Collaborative, flexible colleague with Middle School history and science teaching experience;
  • Clear communicator with students, colleagues, and parents;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a child’s social/emotional development and developmentally appropriate curriculum;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and curiosity regarding curriculum design, varied pedagogical approaches as well as different styles and types of assessment.
  • Experience designing lessons based in Understanding by Design (UbD). 
  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in related field;
  • Understanding of and experience in applying best practices in anti-racist education;
  • 2-5 years teaching experience, and demonstrated desire to teach in the middle school.
  • Ability to participate in an outdoor education trip for 2-3 nights (additional stipend paid)
  • Additional Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees/certification are desirable in History, Science and/or education.
  • Experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) when designing lessons/courses. 
  • Interested candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest as well as a current resume.
