Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Director of Care, the Health Care Aide (HCA) is an unregulated member of the interprofessional health care team who provides on-going client care. The HCA observes, monitors and reports on client status/condition including changes in physical and emotional status. The HCA ensures that changes in client status are reported to the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). This position delivers prescribed medications accurately as per policy and procedure.
This role requires a strong foundation in trauma-informed care and experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses, responsive behaviors, and neurological conditions such as brain injury, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis (MS). The HCA must also be adept at supporting the unique needs of a younger adult population living with chronic diseases and disabilities, often presenting with multifaceted and evolving care requirements. In keeping with Carewest’s Frame of Reference, Philosophy of Care and Carewest policies this position maintains professional and ethical standards at all times. Responsible for other related duties as required.
Program Summary:
EQuaL (Enabling Quality of Life) – for adults aged 18 to 64 who have disabilities related to a disease or condition, such as multiple sclerosis or a brain injury, currently requiring the full-time support of a continuing care centre.
Qualifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required, plus graduation from an Alberta Government recognized Health Care Aide program. - Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English is required.
- Must be physically capable of managing the frequent lifting, transferring and repositioning of clients.
- Active and current registration in the Alberta HCA Directory required.
- Related experience in a health care facility is an asset.
- Program specific training/experience is an asset.
Experience and/or training in the following areas is strongly preferred:
- Trauma-informed care.
- Mental health diagnoses and treatment.
- Responsive behaviors and behavioral management.
- Neurological conditions including brain injury, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis (MS).
- Complex care needs of younger adults living with chronic disease and disabilities.
