Dotmatics is seeking an enthusiastic and hands-on Product Manager with applied molecular biology and/or bioinformatics experience to join the Geneious product team in Auckland, New Zealand. You’ll apply your scientific expertise and creative problem solving skills to translate customer insights and business objectives into product initiatives.
You will be instrumental in shaping the future product direction and growth of our Geneious software products, which are used daily by researchers around the world. By engaging with both customers and internal stakeholders, you will deliver product improvements that result in measurable user satisfaction, retention and growth.
We are open to graduates who have the relevant education, so previous product management experience may not be necessary .
This is a hybrid position based in our Auckland office, where you’ll collaborate closely with local and globally distributed development teams.
In this role you’ll get to:
- Become a master of Geneious, the competitive landscape and relevant trends
- Be the voice of both the customer and the business within the development team
- Own product initiatives, and define project scope, milestones and timelines in collaboration with stakeholders
- Identify, prioritize, and help resolve user-facing issues and functional challenges
- Undertake user research and prototype tests in collaboration with designers
- Leverage data analytics and user insights to inform product decisions
- Define requirements and designs, in collaboration with the development team
- Communicate development progress to the company and collaborate with other teams to produce documentation and collateral
- Interface with other product teams, marketing, customer success and other stakeholders as necessary
We are looking for people who have a postgrad degree in Biology or Bioinformatics, ideally with 4+ years of molecular biology research experience (If you have extensive scientific experience in this area, previous product management experience may not be necessary). The ideal candidate is a flexible, pragmatic and creative problem solver with strong interpersonal skills and empathy, who can both focus in on the details and zoom out to see the big picture.
The key skills we are looking for:
- Excellent written and oral communication - Help developers understand scientific workflows, dive deep with peers and talk big picture strategy with executives
- Research experience - Apply your molecular biology / bioinformatics / scientific software experience to building software that enables users to efficiently and effectively perform sequence design and analysis workflows
- Cross-functional collaboration - Work across design, engineering, support, marketing and directly with customers to understand needs and balance trade-offs
- Data analysis - Analyse qualitative and quantitative data on product usage, limitations and feedback to inform product development and prioritisation
- Customer centric - Uncover and solve real problems by proactively seeking feedback and analysing data with an open mind
- Time management and organisational skills - Product management is at the confluence of customers, design, engineering, marketing and sales. There is lots to do and organise
- Flexibility and Pragmatism - Expect and prepare for changing priorities based on changing understanding, technologies, or business priorities. Know when something is good enough and when you need to start from scratch
- Scientific workflow decomposition - Break down complex experimental or analytical processes into logical steps to help map user workflows.
- Problem framing and hypothesis driven thinking - Approach product challenges the same way a scientist approaches research: with hypotheses, constraints, and validation.
You May Also Have:
- Familiarity with UX tools (e.g., Figma) and ability to partner effectively with design to support intuitive user flows
- Fluency in Agile methodologies and tools (Jira, Confluence), with experience driving user stories from backlog to production
Research shows us the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting outstanding candidates, so please don’t hesitate to apply — we’d love to hear from you.
