Seeking a qualified Senior Cloud Engineer with extensive cloud architecture experience to support engineering and data infrastructure services for U.S. Census Bureau enterprise systems. The successful candidate will provide expert-level cloud engineering support for Census Bureau data systems, focusing on AWS-based data lake architectures and analytics platforms. This position is 100% remote.

Responsibilities:

Cloud Infrastructure Engineering:

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable AWS cloud architectures supporting Census data collection, processing, and analytics systems across the enterprise.

Data Platform Support:

  • Provide hands-on engineering support for AWS data services including Redshift, Athena, Glue, Lake Formation, and EC2 to enable efficient data processing and analysis.

Infrastructure as Code:

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure automation using Terraform and Python to ensure consistent, repeatable deployments across Census environments.

Application Development Support:

  • Collaborate with application development teams to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize cloud infrastructure supporting Census applications and data pipelines.

Data Lake Architecture:

  • Support the design, implementation, and operation of data lake architectures ensuring efficient data ingestion, storage, transformation, and access patterns.

Performance Optimization:

  • Monitor system performance and identify areas for improvement to ensure efficient data processing and analysis across Census Bureau enterprise systems.

Documentation and Collaboration:

  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation and work collaboratively with Census Bureau teams to ensure alignment with mission requirements and technology standards.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or related field
  • Fifteen (15) to twenty-five (25) years of IT experience with extensive hands-on cloud engineering experience
  • Extensive experience with AWS cloud services, specifically:
    • AWS Redshift
    • AWS Athena
    • AWS Glue
    • AWS Lake Formation
    • AWS EC2
  • Strong proficiency with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Advanced Python scripting and automation capabilities
  • Previous experience with U.S. Census Bureau data systems and environments
  • AWS certifications preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Deep expertise in AWS cloud architecture and engineering best practices
  • Proven experience designing and implementing data lake architectures at enterprise scale
  • Advanced troubleshooting and debugging skills for complex cloud environments
  • Strong ability to support and collaborate with application development teams
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills to work with diverse technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, understandable language
  • Experience working in federal government environments, preferably with Census Bureau systems
  • Understanding of data governance, security, and compliance requirements in government contexts
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a remote work environment

The Requirements:

  • Primarily remote work arrangement with occasional need for in-person meetings in the DC, MD, and VA area and potential for short term travel to Census Bureau sites
  • US Citizenship with ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance, which involves a background investigation to determine suitability for access to sensitive data

In compliance with pay transparency guidelines, the annual base salary range for this position is $140,000 - $205,000. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. T-Rex considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
