Location: Flexible (San Mateo, CA / Carlsbad, CA). This role offers the flexibility to work from home, within proximity to an office location.
The Role
At GoPro, UX isn’t about polishing screens—it’s about designing confidence in the moments that matter most. As a Senior Hardware UX Designer focused on camera UI, you’ll shape how creators, athletes, and adventurers interact directly with our cameras—often in fast, physical, unpredictable environments where clarity and speed matter more than ever.
This role is squarely focused on on-device experiences: camera interfaces, controls, feedback, states, and flows. While GoPro has dedicated UX teams for mobile apps and software, this position lives at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and human behavior. If you enjoy solving hard UX problems where every decision truly matters, this role is for you.
What You Will Do
- On-Device Camera Experiences
- Lead UX design for camera UI, including navigation models, capture modes, settings, alerts, and system feedback
- Design interactions that are fast, glanceable, and reliable in high-pressure, real-world scenarios
- Balance usability, discoverability, and efficiency within tight hardware and firmware constraints
- Own Problems End-to-End
- Drive design from early exploration through execution, iteration, and ship
- Clearly communicate design intent through flows, interactions specs, prototypes, and storytelling
- Partner closely with firmware, hardware, QA, and product to ensure solutions are feasible, testable and shipped with high quality
- User-Centered, Data-Informed Decisions
- Plan and conduct usability testing and validation for camera UI—both structured and scrappy
- Apply qualitative and quantitative insights to refine designs and resolve tradeoffs
- Advocate for user needs with evidence, clarity, and pragmatism
- Design Leadership & Collaboration
- Set a high bar for UX quality and craft within cross-functional teams
- Lead and participate in design reviews, offering thoughtful feedback and helping elevate team output
- Contribute to shared UX patterns, principles, and systems for camera experiences
- Push What’s Possible on Camera
- Explore new interaction models, input methods, and feedback mechanisms relevant to camera hardware
- Continuously identify opportunities to simplify, refine, and improve the camera experience
Skills We’re Excited About
- 6–10 years of experience designing user experiences for shipped products
- A portfolio demonstrating complex problem solving, strong interaction design, and real-world constraints
- Deep understanding of user-centered design principles and interaction patterns
- High proficiency with Figma and current design tools
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical partners
- Comfort designing within hardware, firmware, and system-level constraints
Bonus Points For
- Experience designing or deeply understanding end-to-end capture workflows—from moment selection and capture through review, management, and sharing—along with the edge cases, failure states, and emotional nuances along the way
- Passion for action sports, adventure, or creator communities, with an understanding of how context and environment shape user behavior
- Experience designing for hardware, embedded systems, or companion device ecosystems
- Curiosity about emerging interaction models, sensors, and technologies relevant to cameras and physical products
