Senior Mine Rescue Engineer

About this Role

The Senior Rescue Engineer leads and coordinates the mine rescue and emergency response function, ensuring the organization’s readiness for underground and surface mining emergencies. This role is responsible for developing and implementing emergency preparedness plans, conducting training managing rescue equipment and ensuring compliance with statutory and company safety standards. The position is critical in safeguarding lives, assets and the environment through proactive risk management and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coordinate and develop the Underground Mine Rescue Team and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) personnel, ensuring effective organization and training.
• Develop, implement, test and continuously improve emergency response plans for underground operations.
• Oversee inspections, maintenance, and ensure accurate documentation of all rescue and emergency response equipment.
• Maintain and enhance Incident Command Center training and operational readiness.
• Drive continuous improvement in Mine Rescue Team performance, including participation in competitions.
• Ensure timely completion of all training and operational tasks to required standards.
• Deliver ongoing training for emergency response personnel in specialized areas such as confined space entry, working at heights, firefighting, vehicle rescue and spill response.
• Collaborate with Surface Mine Rescue Team (MRT) personnel to ensure integrated emergency response capability.
• Foster positive working relationships with other mine departments to support smooth operational processes.
• Ensure strict compliance with all mines safe work procedures and operating standards.
• Actively participate in safety meetings, pre-start briefings and shift team discussions
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies

• Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Certified Mine Rescue or Emergency Response qualification.
• Minimum of 8 years’ experience in underground mining operations with significant emergency response exposure.
• Certified Mine Rescue Instructor or Mine Rescue Team Trainer recognized by the Minerals Commission Inspectorate Division.
• Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and provide structured feedback.
  
• In-depth knowledge of Ghanaian mining, safety, and emergency response regulations, including Minerals Commission and Inspectorate Division requirements.
  
• Strong leadership and coordination skills with the ability to manage teams effectively.
• Extensive experience in emergency response within mining, industrial operations, and fire/rescue services.
• Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following such as Industrial or emergency medical response, Breathing apparatus and gas management, HAZMAT response, Vehicle rescue, Vertical rescue and rope access, Confined space rescue and Industrial emergency responses.
• Strong understanding of industrial safety, health and environmental management systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Great communication skills both verbal and written.
