Senior Software Engineer (Backend)
What we want to accomplish and why we need you.
Suki is creating a new category in the health-tech space: the digital assistant. Our product will be the voice user interface for healthcare. What does that mean? Currently, doctors use electronic health record systems to take notes on patient encounters. This is a digital version of the paper charts that you may have seen in your doctor’s office or on TV. These systems can be hard to navigate and time-consuming to manage. Doctors would rather spend that time with patients. We are creating the solution. Doctors that use Suki already spend over 70% less time on administrative tasks, and we’re striving to do even better. Come and join us!
We are a user-driven company and are committed to making sure every pixel of our product is in service of the doctor. We’re a team of technologists, clinicians, and industry experts working together to push the limits on technology used in medicine. We’re confident enough to move fast and talented enough not to break things. Check out this short video to learn more about our mission and our culture.
What will you do every day?
We are looking for strong Backend Developers to join our Engineering team, with exposure to Machine Learning Engineering. You will play a critical role in building robust, scalable backend systems that power ML-driven features. Specifically, you will:
- Define and Drive Architecture: Own the technical strategy for Suki’s core backend services, distributed systems, and API infrastructure. Lead initiatives to evolve our systems for reliability, resilience, and scalability.
- Build Scalable Systems: Design and build robust services to support high-throughput voice, text, and real-time data flows, ensuring low-latency and high availability across geographies.
- Own Distributed Infrastructure: Architect and scale distributed systems for messaging, storage, service discovery, and data consistency - across Kubernetes, GCP, and other cloud-native technologies.
- Solve Hard Problems: Lead technical design for complex backend challenges such as service orchestration, fault tolerance, system reliability, rate limiting, and caching in a high-concurrency environment.
- Raise the Bar on Engineering Excellence: Champion best practices for code quality, testing, observability, incident response, and deployment automation (CI/CD). Drive initiatives in system performance benchmarking and optimization.
- Mentor and Multiply Impact: Coach and guide junior as well as senior engineers, contribute to design reviews across teams, and help grow backend and infrastructure talent across the organization.
- Stay Hands-On: Actively contribute to critical codebases, prototype foundational components, and lead deep-dive debugging and incident resolution
What are we looking for in the perfect candidate?
- Expertise in Backend Engineering: Proven experience building high-throughput, low-latency backend systems. Deep knowledge of microservices architecture, service mesh, event-driven architectures, and system observability.
- Distributed Systems Fluency: In-depth understanding of consistency models, CAP theorem, distributed tracing, service orchestration, failure recovery, and messaging systems (e.g., Pub/Sub, Kafka, Redis Streams).
- Technical Leadership: Experience driving cross-team backend projects. Ability to communicate architectural trade-offs and influence design decisions across engineering.
- Pragmatic Problem Solver: Bias toward shipping solutions that balance technical rigor and business impact. Skilled at breaking down ambiguity into actionable, scalable systems.
- Mentorship & Collaboration: Enthusiastic about mentoring engineers and enabling high-quality engineering culture across the organization.
- Exposure to Cloud & DevOps Experience: Some hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and infrastructure on public cloud platforms (GCP preferred). Ability to influence platform evolution and system reliability
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field
- 7+ years of experience in backend software engineering, including technical leadership on large-scale systems.
- Expertise in at least one system-level programming language (Go or Python preferred).
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems, system design patterns, and microservices architectures.
- Familiarity with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, REST, and API versioning strategies.
- Strong command of performance tuning, monitoring, and observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
- Prior experience working in high-concurrency, real-time, or low-latency environments is a strong plus.
It will be a huge plus if you have:
- Experience working with LLM Vendor APIs (e.g. Open AI) or integrating foundation models into backend systems.
- Familiarity with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and service communication patterns in microservices environments.
- Background in building or scaling ML infrastructure (e.g., feature stores, training pipelines, GPU orchestration).
- Experience with backend observability tools and designing systems for resilience and debuggability.
