Build AI systems that actually run healthcare
Today, patients and clinicians feel the time, energy, and stress wasted on the administrative burden of the U.S. healthcare system. At R1, we are building an AI-powered revenue operating system to hide that complexity—helping hospitals get paid accurately and faster so clinicians can focus on care instead of paperwork.
You’ll join R37, R1’s AI lab, where engineers build production AI and agentic systems that automate medical coding, billing, and denial management. This is not prototypes or demos—your code ships into products used nationwide.
We work with massive, real datasets:
180M+ claims
550M patient encounters
1.2B workflow actions, and their ultimate outcomes
Your work will directly impact how quickly hospitals get paid for the care they provide.
What you'll build
Design, code, test, deploy, and operate frontend applications, backend services, data pipelines, and AI systems that power models, specialized reasoning and resolution agents, and human-in-the-loop AI features
Run A/B tests and ship production features tied to real business outcomes
Partner closely with product managers and operators to turn cumbersome manual workflows into agentic and AI-driven automations
Work with AI and ML engineers to build AI-native systems that combine deterministic logic, traditional ML models, and LLMs
Design and build secure, compliant, and reliable systems at scale
Who you are
Software engineer with 3-6+ years of experience building and operating production systems
Demonstrated experience owning features or services end-to-end in production
Comfortable leading projects independently, from design through deployment and iteration. You love talking to users directly to understand their needs and designing solutions hand in hand with product.
Experienced scaling production systems including debugging real-world issues across performance, reliability, and data correctness
You want meaningful ownership and the ability to influence technical and product direction
You’re curious about applied AI and eager to deepen your expertise
You care deeply about clean code, reliability, and production readiness
Healthcare experience is not required.
