The Role

As a Senior AI Engineer at Apptegy, you will play a key role in designing and implementing intelligent systems that enhance how schools communicate and operate. You’ll work at the intersection of product, engineering, and data, using your expertise to build and deploy AI-powered solutions that drive measurable impact across our platform.

What You’ll Do

Technical Execution & Strategy

• AI Solutions: Design and optimize prompts for LLMs (content generation, chatbots) and build integrations with multi-cloud platforms using modern MLOps practices.
• Strategic Alignment: Collaborate with product managers and business leaders to align technical efforts with business objectives, making significant contributions to strategic planning.
• Architecture & Scalability: Take responsibility for designing system architecture, ensuring system scalability, security, and performance, and anticipating potential technical challenges before they arise.
• Process Optimization: Optimize development processes by decomposing large, complex tasks into manageable units of work, ensuring efficient execution.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Mentorship: Actively mentor junior engineers, sharing knowledge and ensuring best practices are followed throughout the development cycle.
• Code Quality: Lead code reviews with a focus on high-quality, maintainable code that aligns with project standards, limiting defect rates.
• Collaboration: Work effectively within teams, valuing diverse perspectives and improving cross-team collaboration to manage timelines and resources effectively.
• Communication: Proactively share ideas, progress, and questions with stakeholders to ensure alignment, while clearly explaining complex technical decisions and their implications.

What You’ll Bring

Experience & Technical Skills

• Experience: 5+ years of experience in software development with at least 2 years focused on AI systems in production.
• Core AI Stack: Strong proficiency in Python and its data science/AI ecosystem, with a deep understanding of modern LLM architectures, RAG, and fine-tuning.
• Applicable Tech Mastery: Mastery in the specific technologies required for the role (e.g., Python/AI frameworks) and a willingness to master core Apptegy stacks (Ruby on Rails, Vue) where applicable.
• Process: Mastery of Scrum/Agile processes and a track record of effectively prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.

What Makes You Stand Out

• Experience with Ruby on Rails, our core tech stack
• Experience with AWS with Certifications (Solutions Architect, AI Practitioner, Machine Learning).
• Experience with common AI orchestration frameworks for LLM flows (e.g., LangChain, Haystack), Agentic Flows (e.g., LangGraph, CrewAI), observability (e.g., LangFuse), and model abstraction (e.g., LiteLLM).
• Background in data science, MLOps, or AI infrastructure design.
• Experience with fine-tuning and benchmarking LLMs.
• Experience with Machine Learning classification and sentiment analysis.
