Primary Function of Position: The Senior Equipment Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, validating, and maintaining manufacturing equipment to ensure efficient, compliant, and high-quality production of medical devices. This role drives continuous improvement initiatives using Six Sigma methodologies, establishes equipment standards, and provides technical leadership, including mentoring junior team members.

Essential Job Duties

  • Lead the design, specification, and procurement of new manufacturing equipment and tooling.
  • Develop and maintain equipment standards and documentation for consistency and compliance.
  • Apply Six Sigma principles (DMAIC, SPC, root cause analysis) to optimize equipment performance and reduce variability.
  • Ensure compliance with FDA, ISO 13485, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and execute equipment qualification protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ).
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex equipment issues.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurring problems.
  • Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Manage equipment-related projects, including budgeting, timelines, and supplier coordination.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers and technicians to build technical expertise within the team.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong knowledge of equipment design, automation systems, PLC programming, and robotics.
  • Proven working experience of 6 years in equipment engineering, test equipment engineering, or automation engineering.
  • Programming experience with MATLAB and Python.
  • Proven experience applying Six Sigma methodologies for process improvement.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and structured problem-solving skills (FMEA, Fishbone, Pareto analysis).
  • Familiarity with CAD software and equipment design tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead projects and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.

Required Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering.
  • Formal training in Six Sigma (Green Belt or higher preferred).
  • Knowledge of ISO 13485 and FDA regulatory compliance requirements.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing or other highly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with advanced automation technologies and Industry 4.0 concepts.
