Role Overview
In Growth Engineering, our goal is to increase the number of transacting Customers while also growing their purchase frequency and lifetime value. We build core platforms and services that power Coupang's growth and marketing efficiency. Various platforms under our portfolio include Search Advertising Platform, Affiliate Platform, Display targeting & re-targeting Platform, CRM, Audience Platform, Push Marketing Platform, and other core marketing services for user profile, landing, tracking & attribution. ML opportunities across these portfolios include targeting, personalization, product & offer recommendations, budget optimization, real-time bidding, creative optimization, fraud detection, and various others.
As a Staff Engineer within Coupang’s Growth Engineering team, you will be instrumental in architecting and developing a next-generation data platform (Marketing Data Service) designed to seamlessly integrate and process online/real-time, near-real-time, and various data streams. This platform will prioritize low-latency processing to transform raw data into a robust, user-centric feature store, enabling high-performance machine learning model training and real-time online inference serving. Furthermore, you will lead initiatives to ensure the platform delivers a dynamic online user profile, offering granular user attribute insights to empower downstream services across the Growth Engineering ecosystem. Your expertise will directly contribute to advancing Coupang’s data-driven capabilities, aligning technical innovation with strategic business objectives.
What You Will Do
- Design, develop, and automate large-scale, high-performance streaming data processing systems to drive business growth and enhance product experience
- Build scalable data infrastructure and pipelines using best-in-class software engineering practices
- Develop optimal data models for storage and retrieval, meeting critical product and business requirements
- Ensure the platform supports high availability, reliability, and low-latency.
- Take full ownership end to end: from solution investigation/benchmark, development to operational health
- Establish and execute short and long-term architectural roadmaps
- Drive continuous improvement to the efficiency and flexibility of the data, platform, and services while maintaining a high bar for customer trust, performance, and availability
- Collaborate with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions
- Implement data quality and validation processes to ensure the accuracy and consistency of ingested data
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Math, or a closely related field
- 6 years of experience in backend software development
- Proficiency in Java and the Spring Framework
- Experience working in cloud environments, particularly AWS
- Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining highly available, distributed systems
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in data-related products with proficiency in Spark, Flink, Spring, and Java
- Experience with open-source frameworks and technologies, like Spring, AWS, APIs, NoSQL, Big Data Technologies (Kafka, Hive, Cassandra, ClickHouse, Apache Flink, Apache Spark, or similar)
- Hands on Python experience
- Excellent coding skills, with emphasis on data structures, algorithms, problem solving, refactoring, performance improvement and complexity analysis
- Distributed systems experience is a must, should be skilled at designing, implementing, and maintaining systems at scale, and working on tradeoffs based on business demand
- Taking ownership comes naturally to you and you thrive in an environment where priorities and requirements are not always clear
- Comfortable working and learning in an agile, fast-paced environment
• Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
• Experience with internet-scale datasets and feature engineering (feature pipeline and feature store development)
• Experience communicating with users, other technical teams and senior management to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs and product strategy
• Experience influencing software engineering best practices
• Hands-on expertise in many disparate technologies, ranging from front-end user interfaces through to back-end systems and all points in between
• Experience working backwards from the customer and delivering innovative, simple solutions
• Fluency in oral English, and Chinese language is a bonus

Pay & Benefits
Our compensation reflects the cost of living across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.
The base pay for this position ranges from $142,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $309,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
