Tech Lead Back-end Engineer

Robots & Pencils is seeking a Backend Developer (L4) to support a dedicated delivery team focused on evolving safety-critical and customer-facing applications used daily by field crews, supervisors, and customers. The team emphasizes reliability, security, and regulatory compliance while delivering technical modernization, roadmap initiatives, and platform improvements. 

You’ll work in a mature Agile environment alongside stakeholders and internal team members to deliver end-to-end backend solutions, while providing technical guidance and leadership to ensure high-quality outcomes. 

This role is ideal for an experienced backend engineer with strong technical leadership skills, expertise in Node.js and TypeScript, and a commitment to building reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend systems. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Node.js and TypeScript. 

• Build and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs to support mobile and web applications. 

• Ensure application reliability, performance, and security in compliance with enterprise standards. 

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including frontend engineers, QA, and product managers, to deliver full-feature development. 

• Lead technical decisions, code reviews, and provide guidance on best practices and architecture. 

• Work with databases (SQL/PostgreSQL or equivalent) and AWS cloud services (EC2, Lambda, RDS or equivalent). 

• Support integration with legacy systems while modernizing the backend platform. 

Required Skills & Qualifications 

• 7+ years of professional backend development experience. 

• Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, REST APIs, and GraphQL. 

• Experience with SQL databases (PostgreSQL or similar) and cloud platforms (AWS). 

• Solid understanding of backend architecture, scalability, and performance optimization. 

• Experience working in Agile environments and delivering high-quality enterprise applications. 

• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams. 

Nice to Have 

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure as code. 

• Familiarity with regulated enterprise environments or safety-critical applications. 

• Previous experience in technical leadership or mentoring roles.
