About the Health Centre:

The Natembea Health Centre ensures high-quality healthcare services for the Ashesi Community through health maintenance, management, prevention of disease, and community empowerment through health education and counseling.

About the Roles:

The University Nurse Officer is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care, preventive health services, and health education to students, staff, and faculty. The role supports the efficient operation of the University Health Center through clinical care, counseling, emergency response, administrative reporting, and coordination of referrals, while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and confidentiality.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Emergency Response

  • Provide professional nursing care and attend to the general health needs of members of the university community during assigned duty hours.
  • Deliver first aid and respond effectively to medical emergencies.
  • Conduct clinical assessments and ongoing evaluations of new and existing patients to determine treatment priorities, suitability of care, and need for referral or modification of treatment plans.
  • Administer prescribed medications and monitor patients’ response to treatment.
  • Accompany students to hospitals or external healthcare facilities during emergencies or when clinically required.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance on referrals to hospitals, clinics, and specialist services.

Counseling, Preventive Care & Health Promotion

  • Provide counseling and support to individuals experiencing health-related challenges.
  • Deliver reproductive health counseling and services to the university community.
  • Educate students, staff, and faculty on public health issues, wellness, preventive care, and common medical conditions.
  • Assist in planning and conducting periodic medical screenings and health promotion programs.

Administrative, Reporting & Records Management

  • Accurately document clinical encounters and complete medical incident reports, submitting same to the Director of Health Services in a timely manner.
  • Maintain comprehensive, accurate, and confidential health records in compliance with institutional policies and professional standards.
  • Compile and submit monthly healthcare statistics and activity reports.
  • Assist in health insurance administration processes for students, staff, and faculty.

 Facility & Equipment Management

  • Support the maintenance of a clean, safe, and hygienic health center environment.
  • Ensure proper use, handling, and routine maintenance of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory levels and reporting equipment or supply needs.


Experience, Educational & Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSc Nursing) from a recognized accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3years of relevant post-qualification nursing experience, preferably in a university clinic or hospital with demonstrated experience in:
    • Primary health care and first aid management
    • Emergency response and patient triage
    • Health education, counseling, and preventive care
    • Clinical documentation and medical records management
  • Valid professional nursing license and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support (ALS) is an added advantage.


Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of clinical nursing practices, patient assessment, and infection prevention protocols.
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality, medical ethics, and data protection standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and counseling skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound clinical judgment, and manage competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and electronic health record systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, and external healthcare providers.
