Job Title: Assistant Controller
Employment Type: Full-Time, Remote
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM CST
Salary: $3,000 – $3,500/month (based on experience)
About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee accounting operations and financial reporting across a growing portfolio of approximately 43 entities, primarily in real estate and development. This role is hands-on and highly impactful, with responsibility for strengthening monthly close processes, implementing controls, and managing day-to-day accounting oversight.
The Controller will work closely with leadership and a third-party CPA firm while directly managing the Accounts Payable function and helping build out the accounting team over time.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
Own and improve the monthly close process across all entities
Ensure timely and accurate reconciliation of accounts
Prepare and review monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, supporting schedules)
Present monthly financial reports to the executive team
Implement stronger checks, balances, and internal controls
Multi-Entity Accounting Oversight
Oversee financials for ~43 entities, including storage and development businesses
Manage accounting activity for new entity formation and property acquisitions (approximately 4–8 per year)
Ensure consistency and accuracy across all entities
Real Estate & Fixed Assets
Oversee accounting related to real estate assets and development projects
Coordinate depreciation, cost segregation studies, and asset capitalization
Work closely with third-party CPA to ensure proper treatment of construction-in-progress and fixed assets
Bring working knowledge of real estate accounting concepts (not filing taxes, but owning the process)
Tax & CPA Coordination
Act as the internal owner of tax-related processes
Coordinate with external CPA firm for tax preparation and filings
Review tax work for accuracy and completeness; proactively identify issues or missed opportunities
Investor Reporting
Own monthly investor reporting for a small group of active investors (3–4)
Prepare quarterly and annual financial packages as needed
Provide concise financial summaries and insights
Team Leadership
Immediately oversee the Accounts Payable team member
Help define future accounting roles and assist with hiring as the team grows
Provide guidance, review work, and ensure accuracy without heavy hand-holding
Systems & Tools
ERP: DualEntry (experience with any modern ERP system required; DualEntry experience not expected)
Reporting/Analysis: Excel; Power BI experience is a plus but not required
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field
3–5+ years of direct accounting experience
Experience working with ERP systems
Strong understanding of monthly close, reconciliations, and financial statements
Excellent written and spoken English
Ability to work independently and take initiative with minimal supervision
Strongly Preferred
Real estate accounting experience (multi-property or multi-entity environments)
Exposure to development accounting, fixed assets, depreciation, and cost segregation
Experience managing or overseeing accounting staff
Comfort working directly with external CPAs and advisors
