Our head office in Auckland is a modern, functional space overlooking the Viaduct, and just a 5 minute walk from Britomart’s central transport hub. We’ve also got access to co-working spaces across New Zealand and Australia, to cater to some of our team and clients in different regions.

We are seeking a Senior Java Engineer (Contract) to join a major mobile transformation initiative for a leading enterprise client. You will play a pivotal role embedded within a cross-functional mobile squad, acting as the primary backend engineer bridging the gap between mobile front-end teams and core enterprise systems.

You will be responsible for designing and developing RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot that service high-traffic mobile applications. This role requires a high degree of autonomy; you will need to lead technical discovery, navigate complex enterprise integration paths, and take ownership of delivering backend solutions that enable mobile features to go live.

This is an initial 3-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension beyond. The role is based in Auckland and operates on a hybrid model, requiring you to be available to work from the client office 3 days a week.

● Senior-level Java and Spring Boot development experience is essential.

● Strong REST API design skills, specifically within an enterprise environment.

● Autonomy and Ownership: Proven ability to work independently, often as the sole backend specialist within a product squad, driving your own technical discovery.

● Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) context: Experience building API layers specifically tailored to support mobile or front-end consumers.

● Testing maturity: A strong background in unit testing and the ability to support quality assurance processes within an agile team.

● Communication: The ability to articulate backend concepts to mobile developers and non-technical stakeholders.

● Exposure to TypeScript or React (ability to assist with occasional web-side tasks if required). ● Previous experience in the Banking or Financial Services sector.

● Experience working closely with Android and iOS engineering teams.

● Designing and building scalable REST APIs that power public-facing mobile applications.

● conducting technical discovery to determine how best to integrate modern mobile features with legacy core systems.

● Working autonomously to identify requirements and unblock backend dependencies for the mobile squad.

● Collaborating with Tech Leads and Principal Engineers to ensure architecture aligns with broader platform standards.

● Championing code quality and assisting with testing coverage to ensure reliable delivery
