The Electrical Engineering Discipline Manager, reporting to the Engineering Director, will lead and develop direct reporting personnel, assure consistent application of client, industry and Nexus standards and collaborate with other Nexus technical and project leaders to improve process efficiency while consistently meeting project budget and delivery commitments. The Electrical Engineering Discipline Manager should be comfortable interfacing with clients, visiting clients’ facilities and performing minimal physical work such as walking, stooping, kneeling and climbing stairs/ladders. The Electrical Engineering Discipline Manager must demonstrate keen interpersonal, leadership, organizational and technical skills and have a thorough understanding of project management and controls practices.
Key Accountabilities:
Creating a culture of collaboration, safety appreciation and camaraderie within the electrical department.
Establishing goals, plans and taking action to develop each direct report’s technical and soft skills.
Assurance that discipline deliverables meet code, client and Nexus technical requirements.
Assignment of personnel to projects based on both project and skill requirements.
Establishing and meeting budgeted hours and timing for project electrical discipline deliverables.
Collaborating with other Nexus leaders to improve department and project delivery efficiency, including counterparts in other offices.
Responsibilities:
Consistently follow Nexus policies and practices applicable to the electrical department.
Understand and teach key elements of process safety and its impact on electrical design.
Planning and organizing department activities.
Lead and/or actively participate in departmental and project technical design and quality reviews.
Write performance reviews, development plans and resolve performance challenges.
Onboard, train, and establish mentoring plan for new staff.
Confer with higher levels of management.
Competencies/Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, verbal and written communication skills.
Experience building and developing high functioning teams.
Working knowledge and appreciation of electrical equipment installation and troubleshooting.
Deep understanding of electrical design and engineering practices, including power distribution for Process/Industrial Facilities and associated hazardous classified area installation requirements.
Deep understanding of various electrical codes and practices (API, NEC, NESC, NFPA, etc.)
Deep understanding of specifications and data sheets (Transformers, Switchgear, Motors, UPS etc.).
Experience with vendor inquiries, bid evaluations, and shop drawing reviews.
Understanding of Power System Analysis and Relay Coordination.
Understanding of Project Management and Project Controls concepts.
Experience managing discipline/project team work according to defined project budgets and schedules.
Working knowledge and understanding of electrical material and labor cost estimating.
Working knowledge of risk management practices.
Educational/Certification Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required
Advanced degree a plus
Minimum of 10 years electrical design
PE Certification a plus
Active participation in professional organizations a plus
Experience in refinery or a continuous process chemical plant is a plus
Electrical project experience providing input to and adhering to engineering schedules, budgets and forecasts
