What you will do:

As Engineering Manager for our Backend Engineering team, your contribution to this mission will be profound. Our backend services are the foundation of the Sensorfact platform. Our backend engineers work tirelessly to design, build, and scale our core APIs, microservices, and integrations with customer systems. They are the beating heart that powers a reliable, performant and valuable user experience across all our products and internal teams.

You will empower a team of 9 talented Backend Engineers, working across different value streams (e.g. Energy or Maintenance), which are multidisciplinary product teams that deliver end-to-end value to our customers. You will be the glue that holds the team together, building a community of practice and standardizing ways of working where appropriate. We believe in leading by example, so you are encouraged to contribute hands-on at times to keep in touch with your team’s developer experience.

• Inspire, mentor, and manage a team of 9 Backend Engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, ownership, transparency and above all psychological safety

• Drive hiring and onboarding processes to grow the team with top talent when needed

• Provide technical guidance and career development opportunities to your team members

• Contribute hands-on in ways complementary to your role, such as by improving architecture and tooling or technical leadership of a product team

• Partner with our Principal Software Engineer to oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of our core backend services and platform infrastructure.

• Work closely with Product Managers of the different value streams to facilitate timely delivery of new features and identify staffing needs

• Collaborate with fellow Engineering Managers and the VP of Technology to advance strategic projects that cross domains, such as IoT device provisioning, domain driven design, and operational excellence

• Establish best practices in backend engineering and software development, emphasizing proper API design, scalability, code quality, testing, and continuous integration

The key technologies you will be working with

Our AWS stack leverages services like ECS/EKS for microservices, API Gateway, and Lambda for on-demand processing. Core services are built primarily in Python and Typescript/Node.js, utilizing technologies like Kafka for internal communication. Data is managed in relational/OLAP databases like Postgres and Clickhouse. We have a powerful internal GraphQL API to expose data to end users, managed by Hasura in combination with Typescript.

How we do it

We do Scrum with 2-week sprints, sprint planning and retrospective sessions. Our stand-ups are at 9:30 and if you're not there you can chime in over Meet. We are very flexible about working from home, but we enjoy meeting each other in the office regularly.

The course is determined by quarterly goals, set collaboratively with the teams themselves. We don't believe in silos, so you will work in a multidisciplinary team with colleagues from multiple departments, represented by a product manager. You will be in the Technology department, the other teams of which are Frontend, Data Engineering, Data Science & Analytics, IoT and DevOps.

What you bring:

• MSc (or PhD) in Computer Science, or a comparable field

• Proven experience (5+ years) in backend or full-stack software engineering, with at least 2+ years in a leadership or management role

• Strong technical background, including Typescript and modern cloud and backend technologies (e.g., AWS ECS/EKS, API Gateway, Kafka, Postgres, Node.js, etc.)

• Expertise in designing and implementing high-scale backend systems, services and databases (e.g., Postgres, relational/NoSQL), ideally built for web apps and event-driven environments.

• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, distributed systems, and scalable infrastructure design.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

• Fluent in English; experience in a scale-up environment is a plus
