Team Background

You will be an Engineering Manager in a team of mathematicians, ML specialists, and Python programmers. The team's key product is mathematical and ML models, yet the responsibilities include much more, starting with the pipelines for data processing and data preparation and ending with deployment to test and production environments.

Your team is mainly in charge of the classical esports titles like MOBAs (Dota2, LoL, …) and FPS (CS2, Valorant) - preparing datasets, designing, training and validating models, focusing on efficient production implementations. Big part of the scope is also discussions and alignment with the game specialists who provide insights into the game and feedback on the models and market pricing.

You have at least 4 years of experience as an individual contributor in the area of ML using Python followed by 1-3 years as a first-level manager. As an individual contributor, you have came across creation and training ML models from scratch and understand what happens under the hood.

Your Responsibilities

Leadership

Lead a 5-8 people team focused on two aspects - ML/math model building and validation and python SW development.

Define team staffing needs and drive the hiring process.

Manage performance of direct reports, guiding them to define and achieve their growth goals.

Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and collaboration.

Technical Strategy & Roadmap

Partner with senior team members to shape the roadmap and together with a PM ensure alignment with business goals.

Challenge others during technical discussions and help with guidance related to ML models development and troubleshooting.

Promote best practices, scalability, and innovation that will help the team succeed and be more efficient.

Delivery & Execution

Own the agile delivery process, find a good trade off between delivery and R&D track.

Help others break down complex ideas into clear, actionable JIRA tickets and drive sprint execution.

Take ownership for and run agile ceremonies, manage dependencies, and remove blockers to keep the team on track.

Skills You Need

Proven Experience - Individual Contributor

4+ years of python programming and model development experience

Experience with and understanding of model development and validation challenges, pitfalls and best practices.

Experience with creation and training ML models from scratch using a standardized library like PyTorch. Ideally also experience with models based on probability theory, random processes and simulation methods.

Passion for solving challenges using both simple heuristics as well as complex solutions.

Preferably university background in mathematics and ML.

Proven Experience - First Level Manager

2+ years of success in leading and managing team focused on ML and mathematical models

Strong communication and collaboration skills to create a positive and productive work environment where people feel supported and motivated.

Ability to provide constructive feedback and support team members in their growth.

Understanding agile methodologies and experience in running sprint ceremonies.

Strong organizational skills to keep track of team progress, identify blockers, and ensure timely delivery.

Ability to break down ideas into well-structured tickets and manage backlog efficiently.

Experience with hiring and onboarging new colleagues into the team.
