Role Overview
The Europe IP Manager plays a strategic and operational role in enabling B2B pharmaceutical growth by protecting, leveraging, and monetizing intellectual property across European markets.
The role ensures that IP strategy is fully aligned with business development, supports partnerships, and mitigates legal and commercial risks in licensing, distribution, and collaboration models.
Key Responsibilities
IP Strategy
- Define and execute European IP strategy aligned with company objectives.
- Manage patent filings, prosecution, maintenance, and renewals.
- Conducting patent invalidation studies and preparing oppositions.
- Assess patent landscapes and competitive positioning.
Business Development Support (B2B Focus)
- Support BD during:
- Deal evaluation
- Due diligence
- Term sheet and contract negotiations
- Product development
- Advise on:
- Exclusivity / non-exclusivity
- Territory rights
- Strategic intellectual property planning (IP strategies for early market opportunities)
- Monitor third party activities and analyze competitor`s patent portfolio.
- Report on Risks and opportunities.
- Field-of-use limitations
Contractual & Legal Support
- Review and negotiate IP-related clauses in:
- Licensing agreements
- Supply & distribution contracts
- Confidentiality & data-sharing agreements
- Ensure IP ownership, background IP, and foreground IP are clearly defined
- Assist in response to patent litigations or regulatory queries as required
Freedom to Operate & Risk Assessment
- Conduct or coordinate FTO analyses
- Identify infringement risks and propose mitigation plans
- Support litigation avoidance strategies
E. Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with:
- Business Development
- Portfolio
- Legal
- Regulatory Affairs
- R&D
- Manage external IP counsels and consultants
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Life Sciences, or Biotechnology.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in Intellectual Property management within the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry.
- Proficiency in interpreting IP laws in Europe.
- Proven experience handling European IP portfolios.
- Hands-on experience supporting B2B pharmaceutical deals, including Licensing-in / licensing-out, Distribution and supply agreements, and Co-development and strategic partnerships.
- Strategic thinking with strong execution capability.
- Clear communication of complex IP concepts to non-legal stakeholder.
