Coefficient Giving (formerly Open Philanthropy) is a philanthropic funder and advisor. Since 2014, we’ve directed over $4 billion in grants as part of our mission to help others as much as we can with the resources available to us. We work with a range of donors who share our commitment to cost-effective, high-impact giving. Our current Funds include Science and Global Health R&D, Navigating Transformative Artificial Intelligence, Abundance & Growth, Farm Animal Welfare, Biosecurity & Pandemic Preparedness, and more. In 2025, we recommended more than $1 billion to high-impact causes.
We’re proud of our track record:
Our grants to evidence-backed global health programs have saved over 100,000 lives, and our farm animal welfare grants have improved the lives of over 3 billion animals.
We supported late-stage clinical trials for the R21 malaria vaccine, now being scaled to protect millions of kids globally.
We were the earliest major funder of the YIMBY movement to build more housing. Our grantees have led the charge on major wins like City of Yes in New York, and SB 79 in California, which will enable hundreds of thousands of new housing units.
We jump-started the field of AI safety and security and have played a vital role in addressing other existential threats, such as mirror bacteria.
Our Grants team processes more than 1,000 distinct grants each year across a range of grant types and jurisdictions. Disbursing all of these grants is a significant and complex undertaking, and the Grants team’s expertise makes it happen as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Grants Associates process grants across all of our Funds; we don't currently specialize by Fund.
For every grant we make, a Grants Associate is responsible for:
Determining how to structure the grant (in consultation with our Legal team, if necessary)
Conducting due diligence on the grantee, and collecting any missing information
Tracking relevant details in our Salesforce grants database
Keeping program staff and grantees in the loop throughout the diligence and payment process, and answering their questions
Tracking grant payments and follow-ups
When we encounter new logistical roadblocks, we strive to break them down as quickly as possible — our goal is to never let bureaucracy block funding for impactful work. When similar challenges crop up repeatedly, we look for structural solutions (e.g., we designed an Individual Grants Program to fund individuals more easily). We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our systems, remove administrative hassle, and grow our grantmaking expertise so that we can solve problems more quickly.
In addition to expert grant processing, our team also owns related projects and tasks such as:
Supporting the set-up of new legal entities or managing logistics for complicated programs like large RFPs (example)
Tracking and reconciling program budgets
Supporting logistics for incoming contributions
Coming up with new processes and automations that improve clarity and efficiency
For a look at the typical workday of a Grants team member, see Anna Maybach Sullivan’s entry in our “Day in the Life” series here.
Our Grants team is composed of eleven people: eight Grant Associates, two Grants Officers, and our Manager of Grantmaking Operations (Alessandra Peters). This role will likely report to one of our Grants Officers, Kate Pruitt or Eddie Moore.
Please note that this is a logistics and operations-focused role. While you will work closely with our Fund teams, this position is dedicated to the execution and management of the grant lifecycle, not grantmaking strategy or grantee selection.
We’re hoping to add two Grants Associates to the team and would ideally like applicants to have at least two years of operations-relevant experience. We don’t expect applicants to be familiar with grantmaking (we have lots of training and resources available), but past experience related to legal compliance, finance, or consulting is a bonus, as is experience in a fast-moving startup environment.
You might be a great fit if you are:
A transparent, professional, and empathetic communicator. You can break down complex information for grantees in an accessible, straightforward way, while showing you understand their challenges and concerns.
Unintimidated by complexity. You can own and execute projects without a clear playbook, break novel challenges down into manageable steps, and come up with creative solutions. You approach problems with empirical and logical reasoning and can apply sound judgment while working independently.
Unusually organized and conscientious. You’re motivated by the idea of keeping systems clean, accurate, and up-to-date — it’ll bother you if the details of the grants you’re working on aren’t properly accounted for.
Highly receptive and adaptable to feedback. You are proactive in seeking and thoughtfully incorporating feedback, and excel in crafting and delivering constructive feedback as needed.
Eager to iterate and experiment. You consistently seek out opportunities for improvement in your workflow, and are open to changing routines and experimenting with new tools and platforms to maximize efficiency.
Excited to become an expert on US and international grantmaking law. We manage one of the most complex grant portfolios in all of philanthropy, and members of our grants team develop a uniquely wide breadth of knowledge for the field.
Motivated by Coefficient Giving’s work and fields in which related work is done, such as Global Health and Wellbeing, Biosecurity & Pandemic Preparedness, and Navigating Transformative AI.
We expect all our staff to:
Put our mission first, and act decisively to help us realize our ambitious goals.
Work to model our operating values of ownership, openness, calibration, and inclusiveness.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess many of the skills and experiences described above. However, there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate. If you are on the fence about applying because you are unsure whether you are qualified, we would strongly encourage you to do so.
Please apply by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday, February 23rd, 2026 to be considered.
Compensation: The baseline compensation for this role is $123,678.56, which would be distributed as a base salary of $107,546.57 and an unconditional 401(k) grant of $16,131.99 for U.S. hires.
These compensation figures assume a remote location; there would be geographic adjustments upwards for candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington, D.C.
All compensation will be distributed in the form of take-home salary for hires based outside of the US.
Time zones and location: This role can be fully remote, and almost everyone on the Grants team currently works remotely.
While we aren’t able to sponsor visas for this role, we are open to hires outside the U.S. willing to consistently overlap with East Coast U.S. business hours for at least 5-6 hours of the day. Our current team is dispersed from the Pacific U.S. through European time zones.
Benefits: Our benefits package includes:
Excellent health insurance (we cover 100% of premiums within the U.S. for you and any eligible dependents) and an employer-funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement for certain other personalhealth expenses.
Dental, vision, and life insurance for you and your family.
Four weeks of PTO recommended per year.
Four months of fully paid family leave.
A generous and flexible expense policy — we encourage staff to expense the ergonomic equipment, software, and other services that they need to stay healthy and productive. This policy also includes a productivity benefit, which provides a set amount for staff to expense items that enhance their productivity.
A continual learning policy that encourages staff to spend time on professional development with related expenses covered.
Support for remote work — we’ll cover a remote workspace outside your home if you need one, or connect you with a Coefficient Giving coworking hub in your city. We currently have offices in San Francisco and Washington D.C., and multiple staff working from several other cities in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Optional in-person time — We generally host optional, one-week in-person gatherings in San Francisco three times per year, and the Grants team also organizes a separate annual retreat.
We can’t always provide every benefit we offer U.S. staff to international hires, but we’re working on it (and will usually provide cash equivalents of any benefits we can’t offer in your country).
Start date: We expect to make offers by late April/early May, and hope new hires can start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though we understand that some candidates may need longer to exit existing commitments. If this timeline doesn’t work for you, please err on the side of applying anyway and let us know in your application in case we can make alternate arrangements.
We aim to employ people with many different experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds who share our passion for accomplishing as much good as we can. We are committed to creating an environment where all employees have the opportunity to succeed, and we do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected status.
If you need assistance or an accommodation due to a disability, or have any other questions about applying, please continue to contact jobs@coefficientgiving.org.
U.S.-based Operations staff are typically employed by Coefficient Giving LLC, which is not a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. As such, this role is unlikely to be eligible for public service loan forgiveness programs.
