Internal Medicine Medical Director (MD/DO)

Position Summary

The Internal Medicine Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight for internal medicine services while maintaining an active clinical practice. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, evidence-based patient care; advancing quality, safety, and operational performance; and supporting physician engagement, professional development, and alignment with organizational goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide medical leadership and direction for internal medicine physicians and advanced practice providers
  • Maintain an active clinical practice in internal medicine (outpatient, inpatient, or mixed, as applicable)
  • Promote evidence-based clinical standards, best practices, and consistent care delivery

Quality, Safety, and Performance

  • Lead quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical outcomes initiatives
  • Monitor and improve clinical performance metrics, patient satisfaction, and utilization
  • Support compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards

Operational and Administrative Oversight

  • Collaborate with operational leadership on clinic or service line efficiency, access, and workflow optimization
  • Participate in strategic planning, program development, and service line growth
  • Assist with provider scheduling, staffing models, and resource allocation
  • Support implementation of clinical policies, protocols, and care pathways

Physician and APP Leadership

  • Recruit, onboard, mentor, and retain internal medicine providers
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Provide performance feedback, coaching, and support for professional development
  • Participate in peer review and credentialing processes as required

Collaboration and Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between internal medicine providers and administrative leadership
  • Collaborate with specialty services, care management, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments
  • Support care coordination and transitions across the continuum of care

Education and Innovation

  • Support clinical education, quality improvement education, and practice transformation initiatives
  • Participate in teaching or academic activities if applicable to the organization

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency program
  • Board-certified in Internal Medicine
  • Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
  • Demonstrated leadership experience or formal training in medical leadership preferred
  • DEA registration or eligibility

  • Manual dexterity for examinations and clinical tasks
  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient care, documentation, and meetings
