We have an opening for an Occupational Health Physician. You will provide a range of specialized medical services for work-related injuries, examinations, exposures, and emergency care, disability management, and medical review of drug tests. This position will function as a part of an integrated health and safety team and be involved in medical surveillance and certification programs, prevention and control of work-related injuries, worksite visits, and population-based prevention and health improvement. This position is in the Health Services Department (HSD) within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will 

  • Provide physician-level medical services, medically oversee work of other health care professionals and serve as a Medical Review Officer (MRO).
  • Provide medical expertise in all areas of occupational medicine, including emergency medical care to Laboratory employees with a wide range of potential medical and surgical problems. Take steps to stabilize critically ill or injured patients and make appropriate decisions regarding their transfer off-site.
  • Provide diagnosis and treatment of occupational illnesses and injuries following OSHA recording and California worker’s compensation requirements.
  • Provide medical surveillance and certification exams that are consistent with regulatory standards, federal law, and LLNL and HSD policies.
  • Perform pre-placement medical evaluations and fitness for duty evaluations involving assessments of work ability, need for workplace accommodations and restrictions, and determination of the need for medical follow up.
  • Champion and lead critical health-related activities and evaluations of the workplace health issues that affect the organization's long-term goals and objectives.
  • Provide consultative expertise and collaborate with other ES&H professionals in ES&H work teams, field work site visits, ES&H program development, medical surveillance program implementation, educational presentations and other liaison activities.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for all components of occupational medicine, including medical surveillance and certification, worker compensation, health promotion, emergency response, and medical epidemiology.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Possess a valid California physician license, or another State’s physician license, with the ability to obtain a California physician license within a reasonable period of time
  • Board certified or eligible with the ability be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in Occupational Medicine.
  • Possess or willingness to complete certification as a Medical Review Officer (MRO), National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME), and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Certification as a California Radiography supervisor or ability to complete.
  • Ability to perform independently, reliably and competently in the exercise of medical judgment providing emergency care, comprehensive treatment of work related injuries, pre-placement, periodic and surveillance examinations; as well as prevention and health promotion interventions.
  • Extensive experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects and programs, and meeting schedules.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service with good follow-through.
  • Advanced analytical, decision-making skills and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret and recommend actions/solutions to highly unusual, complex and/or sensitive medical issues.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, collaboration and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively write, present, explain and communicate highly unusual, complex and sensitive medical information and recommendations to all levels of personnel, including managers and Laboratory leadership.
  • Ability to meet immunization and tuberculosis screening requirement for health care workers.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Expert knowledge of OSHA recording and California worker’s compensation requirements for occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Expert knowledge of a wide range of workplace hazards including chemical, biological, radiological and ergonomics.
  • Extensive experience with the methods of population-based health analysis and prevention.

Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.

Pay Range: $282,210 – 359,700 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary range in good faith we believe would pay for this role at the time of this posting.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
