Position Overview
We are seeking a part-time (25 hrs per week) Page Supervisor who will oversee branch Page and Library Aide staff while also serving as a primary point of contact for patrons, contributing to a positive atmosphere by providing exceptional customer service to HMMPL patrons. This position engages in a range of responsibilities, including supervising Page and Library Aide work activities, helping with material transit oversight, supporting library staff, material check-ins and outs, holds management, library card registration, and resolution of account inquiries. Additionally, this role serves as a Person-In-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Branch Manager and Assistant Branch Manager.
We are actively seeking candidates who meet the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university
- Indiana Public Library Certification (or the ability to obtain a temporary permit or certification within six months of hire)
- Supervisory Experience (at least three years)
- Valid Indiana Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire)
What You'll Do
Supervisory Duties
- Provides direction, leadership, and support to staff
- Creates, monitors, and adjusts long-range and weekly schedules for Page and Library Aide staff
- Assists with interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating performance for assigned personnel
- Participates in regular management meetings to communicate information to staff, listens to staff concerns, and reports them to senior management as appropriate
- Serves as Person in Charge (PIC) in absence of the Branch Manager and Assistant Branch Manager
Patron Interaction Services
- Greet patrons, assess their needs, and direct them to the appropriate resources
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the library’s operations, mission, and available resources
- Assist patrons with library card accounts, including new registrations, verification, policy communication, and payment processing
- Resolve patron account disputes
- Provide readers’ advisory services, technical troubleshooting, and reference assistance
- Offer support in locating materials within the library
Material Management
- Assist Page and Library Aide staff members with transit administration.
- Conduct check-in and check-out of library materials
- Assist patrons at self-check-out stations and provide guidance on technology-related issues
- Manage payments, record transactions, and balance/reconcile cash drawers
- Place, fill, and remove holds on library materials
- Inspect returned materials for damage, addressing missing pieces, and taking appropriate action
- Clear returned materials as needed
Administrative and Organizational Tasks
- Participate in opening and closing procedures for the building
- Contribute to the organization of materials through activities such as shelf reading and creating displays
- Fill transit requests and process incoming and outgoing items
- Empty drop boxes, sort materials
- Contribute to library-wide and off-site events
Additional Duties
- Collaborate with Technical Services on weeding and identifying needs in the collection
- Assume person-in-charge duties. Attends to patron, security, and building issues as needed
- Attend and actively participate in group meetings, trainings, and stay current on library trends
- Additional duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience Requirements and Preferences
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
- Strong verbal and written communications skills for effective interaction with patrons and team members
- Proficient in MS Office and Windows and various devices with the ability to adapt to new technologies and to train on technologies
- Previous experience in customer service and working as a member of a team
- Strong organizational abilities to manage multiple tasks and maintain order
- Sensitivity to diverse patron needs and a commitment to promoting inclusivity
Preferred:
- Experience with Dewy Decimal System and library database apps preferred
- Supervisor experience in a library
Physical Demands:
- This position requires physical demands, including reading, writing, maintaining hand-eye coordination, standing, sitting, walking, bending, crawling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting items weighing 15-20 pounds
