ABOUT AMERICAN OPERATOR
American Operator exists to keep the American Dream alive through small-business leadership & ownership. We place experienced operators into businesses of retiring owners who want their life's work placed in capable, values-driven hands. Our mission is to ensure great businesses stay local, stay strong, and stay in the hands of leaders who care.
Operators who partner with us step into the CEO role of an established Main Street business backed by hands-on support, strategic guidance, and a community of peers. This is not a solo endeavor. American Operator is your partner from day one, investing in your success as you invest in the business. Over time, operators follow a clear pathway to earn significant equity in the business they lead.
THE ROLE
American Operator is hiring a CEO to lead an established durable medical equipment distribution company in the Los Angeles metro area. The business has been operating for over two decades, serves multiple customer channels, and has a stable, long-tenured team in place. The retiring founder will be available for an operational transition to support knowledge transfer.
As CEO, you will have full P&L responsibility and lead the business through a leadership transition with American Operator as your strategic partner throughout. This is not a corporate management position and it is not a solo operation. The business has operational complexity across multiple revenue streams including pure distribution, billing, and PI claims. It requires a leader who understands healthcare services, thrives on complexity, and can build referral relationships. The right person will treat this business as their own — and the structure is designed to reward that mindset with real equity over time.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Lead day-to-day operations across multiple revenue streams with different billing cycles and margin profiles
Own the full P&L
Retain and develop the existing team through the leadership transition, with particular focus on the key staff who are the operational backbone
Build and grow referral relationships with physicians, attorneys, and managed care organizations
Manage working capital across revenue streams with collection timelines ranging from 60 days to two years
Absorb institutional knowledge from the retiring founder during the transition. Client relationships, negotiation processes, and operational playbooks
Diversify the customer and referral partner base to reduce concentration risk
Partner with American Operator on strategy, budgeting, and growth planning. You lead the business, and AO supports you with resources, coaching, and a network of experienced operators
WHAT YOU'VE DONE
Worked in the healthcare industry with direct exposure to medical billing, reimbursement models, or durable medical equipment distribution
Built revenue through relationship-based or consultative selling. Specifically to referral sources such as physicians, attorneys, or managed care partners
Held personal P&L accountability in a small business or business unit. You have been responsible for financial outcomes, not just activity metrics
Managed a team of 5 to 20 people in a small business environment. You have led a stable team through change
WHAT SETS YOU APART
Experience with personal injury lien-based billing or workers' compensation claims processes
Working capital and cash flow management experience across revenue streams with different collection cycles
You have inherited a business, team, or key client relationships from a departing leader and successfully absorbed institutional knowledge
Healthcare regulatory familiarity
Experience managing customer concentration risk and actively diversifying a referral base
COMPENSATION
Base salary starts at $175,000, with benefits provided by the portfolio company including health, dental, and vision insurance. The compensation package also includes distributions, performance bonuses, and equity that grows based on your ability to drive results with the potential to become a significant owner of the business you lead.
LOCATION
This opportunity is located in the Los Angeles, CA metro area. Relocation will be required if you are not currently in the area. The exact location will be shared during the interview process.
