About the Role

We are looking for a Quality Assurance Engineer / Automation Tester based in New Zealand with strong manual testing foundations to join a distributed delivery team working on a large-scale secure digital platform redevelopment. This role is intentionally positioned in the manual‑to‑automation space. You will be expected to perform hands-on manual testing while also designing, building and maintaining automated test coverage using C# and Playwright. Strong analytical thinking, exploratory testing and structured manual testing are essential.

The platform includes a web application and an installable application designed for locked-down devices. It is built on Microsoft Azure using React, React Native, REST APIs and Microsoft Graph.

You will collaborate closely with QA leadership, developers and product team members across multiple time zones, contributing to both immediate delivery confidence and longer-term automation capability.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse business requirements and user stories to design effective manual and automated test coverage
  • Perform hands-on manual testing including functional, regression, integration and UAT testing
  • Identify suitable automation candidates and implement automated tests using C# and Playwright
  • Maintain and improve automated test suites to support release confidence
  • Validate authentication, permissions and data integrity across Azure-hosted environments
  • Test UI behaviour, responsiveness and accessibility across web and mobile applications
  • Validate REST API integrations, payloads and error handling
  • Ensure security, privacy and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) are met
  • Log, manage and prioritise defects using Azure DevOps or similar tools
  • Work closely with developers to diagnose issues and improve testability
  • Contribute to test strategy, risk assessment and continuous improvement initiatives

What you’ll bring

  • 3–6 years’ experience across manual testing and test automation for web and or mobile applications
  • Strong manual testing skills, including exploratory testing and structured test case design
  • Comfortable moving between manual and automated testing based on delivery needs
  • Solid understanding of SDLC, Agile delivery and defect management processes
  • Ability to translate requirements into test scenarios, automation candidates and traceability
  • Experience working in secure or restricted environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to collaborate across cultures and time zones

Technical Experience

Automation and Testing

  • Strong experience using C# for test automation
  • Hands-on experience with Playwright/Selenium/Cypress (any of) for browser-based automation
  • Understanding of test design patterns, maintainability and test data management
  • Experience balancing automation with manual testing rather than replacing it

Frontend Applications

  • Experience testing React (web) and mobile applications
  • Testing UI behaviour, responsiveness and accessibility across devices and browsers

APIs and Integration

  • Testing RESTful APIs using Postman/Bruno or Swagger UI
  • Ability to validate API responses, error handling and integration flows
  • Understanding of JSON payloads, response codes and authentication mechanisms

Cloud and Security

  • Exposure to applications hosted in Microsoft Azure
  • Understanding of Azure AD or Entra ID authentication flows (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect)
  • Awareness of secure-by-design principles, access control and data protection concepts

Tools and Workflow

  • Experience using Azure DevOps, Jira or similar tools for test and defect management
  • Comfortable using browser developer tools and debugging proxies (Fiddler, Charles, etc.)
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum teams with distributed stakeholders

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience working on secure, regulated or high-trust systems
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into build workflows
  • Knowledge of accessibility testing and security-focused testing techniques
  • Experience within government or working within a government supplier relationship
