Position Summary
The Senior Welding Engineer provides essential technical support, governance, and QA oversight for all welding repairs and activities across the company's assets, including on-site and workshop locations. This role ensures that emergency maintenance and welding repairs are conducted safely, efficiently, and in strict compliance with industry standards and internal procedures.
The position is critical for minimizing plant downtime and financial loss by prioritizing optimized repair strategies over part replacement. It ensures all technical solutions are sound, auditable, and code-compliant to prevent rework and preserve plant availability. Additionally, the role provides vital technical decision-making and QA/QC oversight during urgent repair situations, interacting with Maintenance, Operations, NDT teams, and external contractors.
Key Accountabilities
Technical Welding Authority
- Provide expert guidance on metallurgy, welding processes, and repair strategies for both planned and emergency operations.
- Prepare, review, and approve critical welding documentation, including WPS, PQR, QMOS, and technical justifications.
- Ensure all activities comply with company QA/QC standards and regulatory codes such as ASME, AWS, and ISO.
Repair Execution & QA/QC Oversight
- Monitor welding repairs to verify compliance with approved procedures.
- Conduct inspections, verify weld quality, and promptly address any identified defects.
- Recommend corrective actions whenever deviations from approved procedures occur.
Emergency & Critical Repair Support
- Provide immediate technical support for urgent repairs affecting plant availability.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define both temporary and permanent repair strategies.
Capability Building & Knowledge Transfer
- Mentor Maintenance and I&C teams on welding standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Promote the consistent application of international welding codes.
- Document lessons learned to contribute to the continuous improvement of company processes.
Position Authorities
- Approval Authority: Authorized to approve welding procedures, PQRs, repair strategies, and technical justifications.
- Operational Challenge: Authorized to challenge any decisions or repair executions that pose an unacceptable risk to plant integrity or operation.
- Work Stoppage: Authorized to halt welding activities if quality, safety, or compliance standards are not being met.
Position Requirements
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Metallurgy, or a related discipline.
- International Welding Engineer (IWE) or IWT certification preferred.
- CSWIP 3.2 Senior Inspector certification.
- Welding and fabrication inspector level 1 or 2, or equivalent NDT/quality certification is an asset.
Technical Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 7 to 15 years of experience in welding engineering, repair execution, and QA/QC.
- Proven experience qualifying and reviewing welding procedures (WPS/PQR).
- Experience supervising repairs on industrial assets like pressure vessels, structures, and piping.
- Strong knowledge of welding codes (ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1/D1.6/D17.1, ISO 15614) and materials behavior (carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys).
- Proficiency in QA/QC and NDT methods.
