Senior Controls Engineer

Location: Remote, up to 50% travel - This position can expect to travel to client facilities throughout North America up to 50% of the time. 

We are looking for a Senior Controls Engineer to join our controls team. You will be responsible for installing and deploying ATLAS, our cloud controls platform, to control the refrigeration system at our customer sites. This individual will ensure that everything is running smoothly by conducting tests and system evaluations, making appropriate recommendations for repair if needed, and monitoring to ensure the performance of all deployed controls. This role is responsible for developing control strategies, ensuring I/O devices are functioning properly, and ensuring all equipment is controlled in a safe and reliable manner. 

This role will report directly to the Controls Engineering Manager and we are looking for this individual to start immediately. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own the creation, implementation, and testing of the facility configuration, including all controls strategies, cause and effects, I/O lists, user permissions, and hardware lists. 
  • Ensure ATLAS integrates with existing on site PLCs
  • Create and error check I/O lists, including ensuring wires are landed properly and I/O points are correctly named and marked. 
  • Troubleshooting electrical panels and electrical signals
  • Discovering discrepancies during testing and working with the controls team to update the control strategy. 
  • Learn and use CK’s internal control language to write, document, test, and help deploy control strategies including
  • Safety checks and responses
  • Finite state machines at the equipment level
  • Process control integrating equipment level control
  • Monitor, characterize, and improve performance of deployed controls
    • Setpoint tracking
    • Tuning
    • Response times
    • Response characteristics
  • Assist in advanced process control and scheduling
  • Contribute to internal control language and software platform feature requests and provide feedback, bug reports, and recommendations to software team
  • Conduct tests to make sure systems are working properly and able to identify issues with potential solutions 
  • Conduct system evaluation and make appropriate recommendations to repair the control system as needed.
  • Has the ability to understand our customer and possesses the passion and drive that the CK team has for the success of Atlas.
  • Help define communication methodology for various types of control systems currently in place at customer sites (Opto-22, Allen Bradley, M&M, AAIM Controls, Andover ETC.) as well as other systems not currently under refrigeration system control (Tank level controllers, utility metering, room temperature sensors, other process controls)
  • Review ATLAS installation methodology and confirm it meets standards expected from an industrial customer base (Enclosure, Ethernet cable runs, Operator panel mounting, I/O wiring).
  • Assist in development of ATLAS technical training for facility maintenance teams that covers basic troubleshooting, hardware replacement and manual operation of systems in the event of critical failure.

What we’re looking for:

  • 10+ years of industrial automation applications experience
  • Electrical experience, including being able to troubleshoot enclosure wiring, landing wires, and installing hardware in industrial sites. 
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering preferred
  • Certified electrician a plus
  • Deep knowledge of PLCs, with the ability to independently program in ladder logic 
  • Experience with various Control Systems including, but not limited to, Opto-22, Allen Bradley, M&M, AAIM Controls, Andover ETC.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to be applied in troubleshooting, programming, and potential repair to the facilities current machinery
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to client sites
  • Strong communication skills effectively communicate with leaders at the facilities as well key decision makers across the organization
  • Industrial Refrigeration experience and exposure to Ammonia Refrigerant, preferred, not required
  • Be able to pass RETA CARO within 90 days of starting 
  • Must be willing and comfortable visiting customers in facilities that process livestock and meat products.  

What success looks like:

  • Successful installation of ATLAS without the assistance of other controls engineers within 3 months 
  • Independent creation of all needed configurations and controls strategies, without the need to heavily edit, before installation.
  • Install ATLAS in at least 12 sites within the first 12 months of employment. 
  • Create a resolution and respond to 90% of customer service requests within 7 days at the 6 month employment point. 
  • Receive 8+ ratings from customers in post-install satisfaction surveys

  • May be required to tolerate working environment with inside controlled temperatures of –20 degrees Fahrenheit and outside ambient temperatures (including heat, cold and precipitation)
  • Must be able to work at heights in excess of 35 ft. and be able to access elevated platforms and catwalks
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work in noisy / wet environments.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; push; pull; reach with hands and arms; stoop; kneel; crouch etc.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to use hand and power tools
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception. Either naturally or with the aid of eyeglasses (use of contacts are prohibited when working with ammonia)
  • Able to work nights and weekends

Compensation: 

The estimated base salary range for this role is $120K-$140K. This role also qualifies for  a company-wide bonus and field pay - an additional cash component for travel to customer sites. With base salary, bonus, and field pay combined, total cash compensation may range from approximately $140K–$165K.

Final compensation is determined by several factors including prior experience, skills, and alignment with the role. The range above is intended to provide a helpful benchmark, though it may be updated as needed.
