Senior Software Engineer - App Team

Location: Remote, US

As a Senior Software Engineer on our Application team, you will be a pivotal member of our fast-paced engineering department, helping us solve critical energy consumption challenges. You will be at the intersection of applied science and production software, translating cutting-edge research in physics simulation and optimization algorithms into a scalable, real-world platform. This is a unique opportunity to apply your software engineering expertise to challenging problems that have a direct, positive impact on the planet.

Your primary responsibility will be to partner closely with our Applied Science team, taking ownership of their innovative models and algorithms and productionizing their groundbreaking work. You will refine, scale, and integrate this code into our core platform, which interfaces directly with industrial controls hardware. We are seeking a candidate with a dynamic background encompassing strong Python expertise, solid computer science practices, experience in cloud-based application development, and an aptitude for data science. The ideal candidate thrives on bridging the gap between research and production, is adaptable in a startup environment, and is ready to make an immediate impact.

This role reports to our App Team Lead and we’re looking for someone to join our team immediately. Our Current Technology Stack includes AWS, Golang, React, Postgres, Python, Time Series Databases (TSDB), Honeycomb/Grafana, Kubernetes, and Docker. Our UI Stack: React 18, Vite, Typescript, Playwright and Vitest, React Query, Redux Toolkit, Radix UI

What you’ll be doing:

  • Partner closely with the applied science team to translate cutting-edge research in physics simulation and optimization into robust, scalable software.
  • Take ownership of, refactor, and scale data science and physics-based AI applications implemented in Python.
  • Apply software engineering best practices—including rigorous testing, CI/CD, and monitoring—to research-level code, ensuring its reliability and performance in a production environment.
  • Work with onsite operators and the control systems team to guide platform design based on real-world feedback.
  • Drive consensus on technology decisions and architectural improvements.
  • Write clear, reliable, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Write unit and integration tests as part of developing high-quality software.
  • Take initiative to identify problem areas and opportunities for improvement in the codebase and our workflows.
  • Monitor and improve application health and performance.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers.

What we’re looking for:

  • STEM degree and 5+ years of experience or 7+ years of experience developing software.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and its data science ecosystem (e.g., numpy, pandas).
  • Proven experience taking complex code from a prototype or research phase to a stable, production-ready state.
  • An aptitude for understanding and implementing complex mathematical concepts or scientific algorithms.
  • Experience working with high-volume CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience working with cloud services (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Knowledge of software design patterns and a commitment to clean code.
  • Collaborative, easy to work with, and strong communication skills, especially when working with non-software teams.
  • Ability to start with a loosely defined problem and deliver a working solution.
  • Experience with Python ML Libraries is a plus (e.g., pytorch, scikit-learn)
  • Experience in implementing HTTP services in Python a plus (e.g., Flask, FastAPI).
  • Experience in Service-Oriented Architecture and API Design a plus.
  • Experience with cloud-computing and distributed systems a plus.
