Definition & Purpose
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director—Recreational Sports Programs and Facility Operations, the Student Manager—Recreational Sports Programs and Facility Operations is responsible for managing the Frontline Services Student Assistants, Facility Supervisors and Lifeguards. This position supervises a staff of 50 to 60 and works closely with the recreational sports leadership team. This position requires effective communication with staff and participants regarding programs, services, policies, and emergency response.
This position is based at the Cal Poly Maritime Academy on the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA.
Requirements
Educational Requirements & Qualifying Experience
- Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. Graduate students must carry 4 units
- Current American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in the following: Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED is required within 30 days of hire, training provided by ASI .
- Previous experience working in a gym, weight room facility, or sports complex preferred.
- Facility security experience preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Exhibit a developed sense of critical thinking, conflict management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to stay focused while working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others or independently, as the situation requires.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise, schedule and manage daily operations for staff of 50 to 60 student employees.
- Assist in training employees in essential duties, customer service and risk management.
- Initiate and/or manage staff coaching, discipline and feedback for staff area.
- Participate in leadership development training with immediate supervisor and student manager leadership team.
- Complete weekly administrative duties, including but not limited to service requests, developing agendas and conducting regular staff meetings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure all area manuals, procedures and resources are accurate and easily available to staff.
- Effectively manage applicable internal and external communication outlets.
- Maintain knowledge of all ASI and staff area policies, enforcing as necessary.
- Serve as an information source of Recreational Sports, Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, Sport Court, and ASI programs and services.
- Produce regular reports, reviews, and assessments of staff area.
- Maintain a positive and professional work environment.
- Maintain familiarity with emergency response protocol.
- Attend all meetings, workshops, and retreats.
- Provide quality customer service to all staff and customers.
- Demonstrate an understanding of effective and efficient resource management.
- Maintain working knowledge of the Fusion software to support staff, students, and participants as needed Exhibit punctuality and dependability by maintaining a consistent work schedule.
- Maintain the integrity of the ASI philosophy and brand.
- Abide by and enforce all ASI and campus security regulations regarding confidential and private information.
Specific Requirements
- Communicate policies and standards of conduct to customers, students, and employees participating in the facility.
- Assume responsibility for all aspects of ASI Recreational Sports, Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, and Sport Court operations in the absence of full-time staff.
- Ensure safe and responsible operation of Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, and Sport Court at all times.
- Administer safety audits for the Facility Supervisors.
- Assist Facility Supervisors in resolving participant conflicts and disputes.
- Make regular rounds in Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, and Sport Court to ensure that activities are being conducted safely and appropriately.
- Communicate with Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC) operations staff for facility maintenance and custodial concerns.
- Contact University Police when on-site personnel are unable to resolve problems. Maintain current hours of operation notification throughout the Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, and Sport Court.
- Meet regularly with direct supervisor to communicate regarding programs, classes and upcoming events.
- Act as a liaison to ASI programs and services regarding Recreational Sports, Physical Education and Aquatics Center (PEAC), Bodnar Field, Morrow Cove, and Sport Court policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain training and operational systems/policy manual.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Period of Employment
If hired, student managers must commit to a minimum of 9 weeks of employment over summer quarter. Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.
Benefits
Compensation & Hours
- Starting Hourly Rate: $18.90 per hour
- Hourly Pay Range: $18.90 per hour – 18.90 per hour
- Maximum 20 hours per week.
May require working late nights, weekends, and holidays.
Requires a minimum of Fall 2026 work availability.
Start Date: Fall Term 2026
