ERG seeks an experienced writer/editor to provide communications, writing, and copyediting support. This is a one-year contract position with potential for extension.
The person hired for this role will work on-site at the offices of a federal agency in downtown Washington, D.C., providing support for its programs and management.
Duties Will Include:
Identifying gaps in current communication efforts and developing and executing comprehensive strategic plans for communicating agency messaging and prioritiesProviding editorial and communications guidance to program officesWriting speeches, talking points, and briefings for agency managementDrafting original content for webpages, fact sheets, and other communication products on a wide range of topics, tailored for varied audiencesConducting background research to ensure the accuracy and completeness of communication productsCopyediting and proofreading documents for grammar, punctuation, clarity, tone, consistency, and adherence to agency style guidesPerforming substantive editing, including reorganizing or rewriting documents for coherence and flowEnsuring compliance with Plain Language Act requirements, Section 508 accessibility standards, and agency brandingWorking closely with government staff, subject matter experts, digital teams, and other contractorsTracking feedback from multiple stakeholders and incorporating it into revised deliverables
Qualifications and Skills:
8+ years of professional experience doing similar types of workExperience developing communications plans and strategiesExperience writing speeches, talking points, and/or briefingsExperience writing content for websites and publicationsExperience copyediting both technical and non-technical materialsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)Working knowledge of The Associated Press StylebookThe ideal candidate will also possess:
Superior attention to detailStrong interpersonal skillsProven ability to meet deadlines while delivering high-quality workBA/BS in journalism, English, environmental or occupational health science, or a related fieldExperience writing about health and safety topicsExperience performing Section 508 reviews and bringing documents into compliance with accessibility standardsFamiliarity with Plain Language Act requirements
