Numeral is building the automation backbone for internet commerce - starting with the painful world of sales tax compliance. We handle everything from registration to remittance, delivering a white-glove service so e-commerce businesses can stay laser-focused on what they do best: growing their products, customers, and teams.
We’re one of the fastest-growing companies from Y Combinator’s W23 batch, backed by top-tier investors including Benchmark Capital. Our team has deep roots from the early days at Stripe, Airbnb, Notion, and other breakout companies - and now we’re bringing that same level of craft, speed, and ambition to a space that’s long overdue for reinvention.
Numeral is small but mighty. Growth is already borderline unmanageable - which means every hire we make now will directly shape the trajectory of the company. If you’re excited about joining as an early team member and want the kind of ownership that defines careers, we want to meet you.
Running an online business today means wearing a thousand hats - most of them not the reason founders started their company. Our mission is to eliminate the administrative and accounting burdens that distract businesses from doing what they love.
We’ve already helped hundreds of merchants avoid the headache of building giant finance teams just to manage tax compliance. Tomorrow, we’re scaling that impact even further: building the automation layer that lets internet businesses stay nimble, compliant, and future-proof.
We’re looking for an Automation Engineer (Financial Operations) to help us replace manual financial workflows with reliable automation.
This role is primarily about:
understanding messy, real-world operational processes
breaking them into deterministic steps
and building automations that execute those steps reliably using internal tools, browser automation, and AI-assisted workflows
You’ll work closely with engineers, operations, and product to turn tribal knowledge and SOPs into systems that run smoothly and scalably.
If you enjoy debugging edge cases, thinking about financial operations, and automating away repetitive tasks, this role is for you.
Build and maintain automations that replace manual financial operations, including sales tax filings, registrations, reconciliations, and exception handling.
Design workflows that combine browser automation (e.g. Selenium/Playwright-style tooling), internal APIs, and AI-assisted decision logic.
Translate ambiguous operational processes into deterministic, repeatable automation steps.
Investigate failures in automated workflows, diagnose root causes, and implement fixes to improve reliability.
Collaborate with operations teams to understand how work is done today, then design systems that remove the boring parts.
Use AI tools pragmatically to accelerate development, debugging, and iteration.
Improve observability and auditing so automated processes are explainable, traceable, and trustworthy.
Experience building or maintaining automation systems, internal tools, or workflow-driven software.
Strong debugging and systems thinking skills: You enjoy answering “why did this fail?” and “how do we prevent it?”
Comfortable working with:
browser automation tools (Selenium, Playwright, or similar), or
workflow / orchestration systems (n8n, Zapier-style tools, internal engines), or
glue code that connects multiple systems together
Ability to reason about data correctness, state, retries, and failure modes.
Comfortable learning new internal tools and adapting to evolving systems.
Clear communicator who can explain what a system is doing and why.
Experience in finance, payments, accounting, tax, or compliance-heavy domains.
Experience automating interactions with third-party web portals.
Familiarity with SQL or basic data investigation for debugging workflows.
Experience using AI tools (LLMs, copilots, agents) to speed up development or automate decision-making.
Startup experience or comfort working in fast-changing environments.
Familiarity with Typescript, Temporal, and PostgreSQL.
Build systems that directly ease human labor with visible, immediate impact.
Work on automation problems that are messy, real, and consequential.
Help define how financial operations should work in an AI-first world.
Join early and shape the foundation of Numeral’s automation platform.
Learn how to scale globally compliant systems through software, not headcount.
Own meaningful pieces of the system from day one.
