The starting rate of pay is $74,901, annually, salary exempt.

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled technical work enforcing adopted fire codes and life safety standards; conducts inspections of buildings and properties; reviews plans for code compliance; and performs related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Building Official.

 Essential Functions

• Conducts review of construction plans for fire and safety requirements in conjunction with Town Code Officers.
• Conducts review of plans for proposed subdivisions, developments, and transportation improvements in consideration of access for emergency vehicles and to ensure provisions for fire protection are in place (e.g., hydrants, adequate water lines).
• Conducts field inspections to assure compliance with appropriate fire code and building code.
• Conducts field inspections of existing commercial, institutional, and multi-family structures to assure compliance with fire and safety codes.
• Conducts and Coordinates fire prevention education programs and services.
• Investigates complaints regarding fire hazard and enforces corrective action.
• Develops and maintains fire and safety prevention procedures for Town’s facilities and equipment.
• Provides fire suppression support.
• Utilizes the guidelines established in NFPA 1730 for inspection frequency and risk classification.
• Responds to citizen requests and complaints as directed.
• Prepares reports and testifies on violations in Court hearings.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of adopted fire, building, and life safety codes and standard construction practices; general knowledge of legal procedures related to the enforcement of ordinances and codes. Skill in reading, interpreting, and applying blueprints, site plans, and construction designs to ensure compliance with applicable ordinances and codes. Skill in creating, maintaining, and managing inspection records and reports; skill in operating standard office equipment and utilizing applicable hardware and software systems. Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and factual written reports and to present findings to appropriate boards, commissions, or other authorities; ability to perform arithmetic computations involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information and prepare technical oral and written reports. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality. Ability to attend and successfully complete required building and fire code training courses, local and national code conferences, and professional association meetings related to code changes and advancements; ability to maintain required state and national certifications and continuing education credits. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, design professionals, public officials, associates, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required.

Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in fire inspection, fire service, or a closely related inspection field required.

Working knowledge of the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC), NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, and applicable state and local amendments required.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI-I)-ICC Fire Inspector I and/or NFPA Fire Inspector I- is required within twelve months of hire.

Valid driver's license in the State of Tennessee.
