Genetic Pathologist - Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor

The Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) and Grafton Clinical Genomics (GCG) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, are seeking to appoint a Genetic Pathologist to support the clinical accreditation and delivery of next-generation sequencing (NGS) tests in both germline and somatic contexts.

This role is a joint opportunity in partnership with Te Toka Tumai Auckland Hospital (Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora). The Diagnostic Genetics department at Te Toka Tumai has established strong links with the University, and this position will work across both organisations to ensure integration of research, clinical service delivery, and teaching:  Job Health NZ/Te Whatu Ora. 

Appointments will be made at Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level, depending on the successful candidate’s experience and academic profile.

You will:

• Provide clinical oversight for somatic and germline genomic testing, including test validation and sign-out.
• Partner with GCG to support ISO15189-accredited workflows and accreditation of new assays.
• Act as the clinical interface with Te Whatu Ora, contributing to patient-centred diagnostic genomics.
• Contribute to the academic mission of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, including teaching, postgraduate supervision, and curriculum development.
• Engage in translational research through the Precision Medicine Initiative, advancing by-New-Zealand-for-New-Zealand approaches to genomics in healthcare.

This is an outstanding opportunity to shape the future of genomic medicine in Aotearoa New Zealand, working at the interface of research, clinical practice, and education. Although this position is currently fixed term, there is potential opportunity for tenure with this academic position.

You will be a vocationally registered Genetic Pathologist (or eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand) and hold FRCPA in Genetic Pathology (or equivalent qualification).

Essential requirements:

• Experience in both somatic and germline genetic pathology.
• Expertise in NGS test design, validation, and implementation.
• A strong academic track record in research and/or teaching.
• Ability to contribute to Molecular Tumour Boards and genetic multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across research, clinical, and academic environments.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 24-month fixed term contract. Salary range from $126,863-$158,904 for SL and $165,808 for AP.

Grafton Clinical Genomics (GCG) is an ISO15189-accredited genomics laboratory hosted by the University of Auckland, operating as a hybrid clinical-research platform under the Auckland Academic Health Alliance.
