What is the purpose of this job?
Do you want to play a leading role at the heart of the rail industry, shaping policy that directly influences how the railway works for passengers, customers and funders?
As a policy professional, you’ll be trusted to provide clear, credible advice to senior leaders across the organisation and to members and key external stakeholders. You’ll work with government, industry and delivery teams — turning evidence and insight into policy that supports real change.
What can I expect to do in this job?
You’ll lead high‑quality policy advice and services for our members and industry partners, working closely with organisations such as the Department for Transport, DFTO and Network Rail. You’ll take ownership of policy development across a broad and challenging portfolio, focusing on issues that matter most to customers and the long‑term sustainability of the rail system.
You’ll be expected to think strategically and creatively, developing ideas aligned to our business priorities and translating them into compelling briefing or consultation responses that influence outcomes and stimulate change across the industry.
A key part of the role will be supporting policy activity linked to RDG’s transformation and the transition to Great British Railways, helping to shape how the industry evolves and ensuring policy keeps pace with reform.
Requirements
What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?
· Essential
o Good inter-personal and relationship building skills with external contacts and internal colleagues
o Good communication skills - verbal, written and presentational
o Excellent numeracy and analytical skills and Computer literate
o Ability to structure, substantiate, draft and then communicate compelling policy positions and briefings
o Broad vocational policy experience, acquired through a combination of job-related training and/or on-the-job experience, demonstrating development through involvement in policy roles
· Desirable
o Knowledge of how UK Government works
o Understanding of rail industry and transport policy agreements (desirable)
