Role overview
The role of the Scrub Technician is to support the surgeons and registered staff by providing high quality care to patients whilst contributing to and ensuring the smooth running of the ophthalmic theatre. Main roles and responsibilities will include providing assistance during high flow cataract lists whilst acting professionally and within own levels of competency at all times. You will work as part of a hard-working and dedicated theatre team, assisting with the daily set up of the theatre and all theatre equipment, instruments and consumables. On completion of our in-house training Scrub Practitioner Programme, you will be required to assist the surgeon to give excellent patient care by providing competent scrub assistance within the operating theatre, whilst gaining proficient skills in aseptic technique and maintenance of a sterile field.
What skills and experience do I need?
Core Skills
- NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
Experience
- Demonstrable experience within a healthcare and/or theatre setting
- An awareness of health and safety principles related to the area of speciality
- Good working knowledge of clinical practice and demonstrable knowledge of developments in Ophthalmology (desirable).
- Able to use IT resources: e-mail, word processing and spreadsheet packages, for data input/output and review.

- A willingness to complete the in-house Newmedica Scrub Practitioner Programme in order to fulfil the requirements for this role, alongside completion of all mandatory training.
- Able to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, and respond to others with respect and empathy

- Able to organise and time keep effectively whilst working under pressure, and enjoy the routine and rhythm of a busy and fast paced environment
