The Senior Chemist will be responsible for developing, scaling up, transferring, and improving products, processes, and related chemistries for the oleo chemical productions in Mapleton, IL, Janesville, WI, and Hopewell, VA locations to meet the needs of Plant Operations, the Business Line (BLs), and our Customers. Working closely will BL Technology, Applications, Oleochemicals Synthesis, and Sales & Marketing personnel, the Senior Chemist will respond to the technology needs of Customers. He/she is responsible for the accurate and timely communication of technical information that supports the development, manufacture, optimization, and sales of products. The focus of the position is an understanding of the chemistry of our products, while applying process engineering principles and experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical improvement of existing product line. Plan, prepare, run, evaluate, and report on Process Improvement and Scaleup experiments and Plant Trials.
- Develop new products and chemistries in line with BL objectives.
- Evaluate, test, and qualify new raw materials for cost-savings and process improvements. Where appropriate, develop processes to produce intermediates which replace raw materials.
- Technical Coordinator between customer and Evonik.
- Presentation of technology both inside and outside organization.
- Maintain the laboratory in a safe and professional manner. Make suggestions to improve the safety of the Laboratory and personnel.
Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry is required. Organic Chemistry preferred.
- Three years of experience working with chemical synthesis and organic chemistry.
- Experience and/or knowledge of chemical manufacturing process development and scale-up processes (lab, pilot plant, production), or background in chemical synthesis and organic chemistry. Previous experience scaling-up/converting batch processes to continuous is a plus.
- Minimum of three years bench work experience in synthetic organic chemistry (preferably surfactant industry).
- Preferred experience in surfactant industry.
- Industrial chemicals and applications preferred over academia or basic research.
