About the Role
As a Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer, you will play a key role in the ongoing development, enhancement, and stability of a large-scale, production Software-as-a-Service platform. This is a senior, hands-on engineering role where you will take ownership of entire problem domains, contribute across the full software stack, and help move the platform forward in line with long-term product strategy.
You’ll work closely with Engineering and Product teams in a collaborative, agile environment, contributing not only to feature development but also to platform operations, technical quality, and system reliability. The role is primarily remote and requires strong communication skills and a high level of technical ownership.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and enhance features across the full Ruby on Rails application stackTake ownership of defined problem spaces, from solution design through to releaseRefactor and maintain existing SaaS functionality to improve performance, scalability, and maintainabilityImplement robust automated test coverage to ensure solutions meet acceptance criteria and behave as expectedConduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to maintain high engineering standardsManage development tasks end-to-end, from backlog refinement to production deploymentCollaborate with Product and Engineering teams during backlog grooming and issue refinementAct as a technical expert within the team, supporting colleagues and resolving development blockersBuild and maintain a deep understanding of system functionality, data structures, and data sourcesIdentify and address technical debt, data quality issues, and user experience inconsistenciesContribute to platform operations by maintaining application containers, dependencies, and framework versionsDeploy to non-production and production environments following established deployment processesMonitor application and infrastructure performance, investigating and resolving issues as they ariseSupport the ongoing stability, security, and availability of the platform
Requirements
7+ years of professional experience developing with Ruby and Ruby on Rails in production environmentsStrong experience maintaining and operating production Ruby on Rails SaaS applicationsProficiency with RSpec for automated testingStrong JavaScript experience, including native JavaScript and jQuerySolid front-end fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and preprocessors such as HAML, SASS, or SCSSExperience building and maintaining scalable REST APIs using Ruby on RailsStrong understanding of agile development practices and working within cross-functional teamsExperience using Git and GitHub as part of a collaborative development workflowFamiliarity with application performance monitoring tools (e.g. AppSignal, New Relic)Ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver work across a variable workloadStrong written and verbal communication skills, essential for a remote-first environmentProfessional, collaborative approach when working across teams and functions
