The Survey Technician is responsible for performing field survey, layout and data collection activities using Trimble RTS and GPS equipment to support construction operations. Working under the direction of the Survey Superintendent, this position ensures that layouts for equipment, conduit, trenching, and structural supports are accurate, documented, and aligned with project design intent. The Survey Technician plays a key role in maintaining project quality, accuracy, and efficiency while upholding all safety and company standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily field layout activities using Trimble RTS and GPS equipment under the direction of the Survey Superintendent.
- Set up, localize, and maintain survey equipment to project control points and verify calibration accuracy.
- Execute layout tasks for:
- Equipment pads and foundation locations
- Trench routing, depth, and slope verification
- Underground and overhead conduit pathways
- Openings, racks, hangers, and other structural elements requiring layout precision
- Field verification of correct installation prior to backfill
- Collect and record as-built data for installed components.
- Verify layout accuracy through field checks, checklist, and coordination with BIM/CAD models and the project VDC team.
- Support the project team in transferring layout data between Trimble equipment and design models.
- Assist in organizing survey data files, control points, and field documentation.
- Report discrepancies or field challenges to the Survey Superintendent or project management for resolution.
- Maintain cleanliness, calibration, and functionality of all Trimble RTS and GPS equipment and accessories.
- Follow company and project safety procedures for survey and layout activities within active construction zones.
- Participate in daily and weekly project meetings as needed to understand upcoming layout needs.
- Provide feedback to improve layout workflows, documentation, and field coordination processes.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in survey, layout, or related construction field work preferred.
- Working knowledge of Trimble RTS and GPS systems, data collection, and layout procedures; training provided as needed.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, civil plans, and basic BIM/CAD layouts.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Ability to walk or stand on job sites for extended periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
