Overview Energy is a mission-driven team committed to delivering Space Solar Energy to the world. We operate at the intersection of space infrastructure and energy abundance, providing baseload power across entire continents 24/7, without seasonality or the need for batteries. Headquartered in the Washington, DC area and backed by world-class investors, we are advancing the next generation of clean energy technology.
The Role
Overview Energy's Avionics Engineer is responsible for the design, integration, and verification of spacecraft avionics hardware and systems, taking ownership from early requirements definition through flight operations support. This role focuses on reliable, high-performance avionics for mission- and safety-critical applications, including computing modules, flight safety systems, sensors, and power/control electronics.
Key Responsibilities
Design, integrate, and test avionics subsystems such as flight computers, sensor interfaces, RF links, and harnessing
Assist in capturing, recording, and confirming system requirements for avionics
Translate system requirements into detailed avionics requirements, architectures, and interface documents
Develop schematics and support PCB layout for digital and analog boards, including high-speed interfaces (e.g., SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, LVDS) and robust analog front ends for sensors and actuators
Develop and execute test plans, procedures, and verification processes for unit-level components through fully integrated systems
Perform power, signal integrity, thermal, and reliability analyses to meet performance and safety constraints
Plan and execute functional, HIL, and environmental tests (vibration, shock, thermal, TVAC) for avionics hardware; coordinate radiation and EMI testing with subcontractors
Support integration, launch campaigns, anomaly resolution, and post-flight data review for avionics systems
Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering or related field focused on electronics or embedded systems
5+ years of experience with aerospace avionics or high-reliability embedded electronics from concept through deployment
Experience with PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCAD)
Experience with version control and configuration management (Git)
Hands-on experience with environmental testing and lab equipment for board bring-up and debug
Proficiency with common lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and data acquisition systems
Proficiency with scripting or programming for test automation and data processing (e.g., Python, C/C++), especially for HIL or system-level test environments
U.S. citizenship required
Preferred Skills & Experience
Master's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering with emphasis on avionics or embedded systems
Experience with flight safety systems, fault-tolerant architectures, and space/aerospace qualification standards
Familiarity with FPGA/SoC designs using VHDL or Verilog
Knowledge of data management systems including onboard storage, data logging, telemetry handling, and memory management
Experience using LLMs for problem solving
