The Clinical Microbiology Department at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) is looking to appoint a Consultant Microbiologist. This is a full-time post consisting of 10 Programmed Activities [PAs] per week, based at Queen Alexandra hospital, Portsmouth. Applicants wishing to work reduced hours will be considered.
The Consultant clinical duties:
Direct clinical care will consist of a specified weekday laboratory duty sessions for Microbiology, the option of contributing to the virology service and advisory service to bacteraemic patients during on-call weeks (1 in 8). This is a very clinically orientated job with a substantial ward round commitment, direct clinician liaison and antimicrobial stewardship input. The specific microbiology/infection clinical responsibilities will be agreed on commencement. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Infection Prevention and Control team and will have to opportunity to take on a leadership role in infection prevention.
On call requirements
The post holder will be required to participate in the microbiology on call rota covering both Trusts, 1:8 weekday evening cover and 1:8 weekend cover. Remote access to laboratory information management systems facilitates advice on patient management and result authorisation across the two Trusts.

Our Microbiology Laboratory is well equipped and is on site in a purpose-built pathology block with an extensive range of diagnostic services including molecular; the lab is UKAS accredited. The Trust has a good reputation in terms of Infection prevention and prudent antimicrobial stewardship which has been nationally recognised. Here in Portsmouth, we have a fantastic spectrum of varied cases so very interesting work to include our renal patients. The microbiology clinical team includes a consultant clinical scientist (virology), a trainee clinical scientist, ID/micro Wessex trainees and an FY2 trainee on rotation. The medical team are a small, yet very supportive and friendly collaborative group who work together for the benefit of patients within the Trust, the surrounding community and with colleagues on the Isle of Wight.
