MFP | Senior Search Engineer (Elasticsearch, Scala)

Solvd is hiring a Senior Search Engineer to help build and optimize the services behind the food search experience for a large-scale consumer product platform. In this role, you’ll contribute to search services that integrate across multiple engineering teams, own end-to-end Elasticsearch performance and relevance tuning, and partner closely with senior engineers, product, and leadership on experimentation and delivery.

This is a hands-on role for someone with deep production experience in Elasticsearch + Scala, and a modern AI-augmented / agentic development workflow (Cursor, Claude Code, or similar).

What you’ll do

• Contribute to, build, and maintain backend services that power the food search experience, integrating with systems across engineering teams

• Own search performance tuning end-to-end, including data design, indexing strategy, query evaluation, and iterative relevance improvement in Elasticsearch

• Evaluate and implement search and data technologies that improve result quality and user experience

• Collaborate with a senior search engineer, product management, and leadership on solution discovery, experiment planning, and delivery

• Build or improve tools, processes, and metrics to measure and monitor search quality and search system performance

• Translate product requirements into technical plans, ship ranking and relevance experiments, and define clear success metrics

Required qualifications

• Elasticsearch (production + scale)

  • Demonstrated experience with Elasticsearch performance tuning, query analysis, and relevance optimization at scale

  • Strong understanding of index design, mapping strategies, scoring/ranking mechanics, and cluster management

  • Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and operational monitoring for Elasticsearch clusters

  • Understanding of clustering strategy and the ability to deploy new indexes or clusters for load balancing or experimentation

  • Ability to implement ranking/relevance experiments with clearly defined success criteria and measurement plans

• Scala

  • Strong experience writing, shipping, and maintaining Scala services in production

  • Comfortable working in a stack that includes SQL and Python, with Scala as the primary language

• AI-augmented / agentic development

  • Experience shipping production code using AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar

  • Familiarity with agentic coding patterns and workflows beyond autocomplete, using AI for acceleration in:

    • code generation

    • refactoring

    • debugging

    • test authoring

  • Ability to clearly explain how AI tooling fits into your workflow and where human judgment remains critical

• Engineering fundamentals

  • First-hand experience building, scaling, and supporting large-scale data infrastructure systems in production

  • Strong grasp of database and data architecture best practices, including performance tuning across data stores (MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis, etc.)

  • Experience with high-volume messaging systems such as Kafka

  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or similar cloud platforms

  • Strong peer code review habits and a quality-first engineering mindset

Nice to have

• Additional experience leveraging AI workflows for meaningful development acceleration across the full SDLC (design to delivery)

• Prior work on search relevance, ranking systems, or experimentation frameworks in consumer-facing products
